I know that this is probably not talked about too much anymore (did a google search and most topics are several years old) but has anyone found a way to play Import PS2 games on a domestic PS3?

Thank you.

For CFW PS3s, there's a homebrew PS2 Emulator for PS3 called PS2 Classics Placeholder to play select PS2 games and you use a PC Tool called PS2 Classics GUI to convert PS2 ISOs to a compatible PS3 format. It uses the PS3's native ps2emu to play them.

NTSC(U.S.), PAL(Europe), and NTSC-J(Japan) all work for it
PS2 Classics Emulator Compatibility List List of games confirmed working/not working. Anything else is hit or miss really.
Some games that I played like Yakuza 1/2 had some crash problems at certain points in the story.

Reason some PS2 games never got on PSN's PS2 Classics like the awesome Dot Hack series by CyberConnect

I've got a question.
native ps2emu, it plays the game on native resolution or what?

The games are run at PS2 Resolution. There are options to upscale and smooth the games on PS3s.

Upscaling runs the games at HD Resolution instead of regular PS2 Resolution. For HDTVs and HDMI only. Others just ignore it whether it is On or Off.
I recommend turning off Upscaling if you have fulfilled the HD requirements because it messes up the loading of some games and kicks you back to XMB.
Game Settings--->PS2/PS1 Upscaler---> Off

Smoothing blurs the game a little to make it look more smooth.
This is okay actually so keep it on if you want to.
Game Setting -->Ps2/PS1 Smoothing -->ON/Off

I see, not sure how its gonna look on my HD Monitor cause it doesn't like anything that's less than 1080p.
Welp gonna check it out.

So you have a fat PS3 with backwards compatibility? I'm surprised it hasn't YLOD'd yet.

Like others said, CFW can play PS2 ISOs from all regions. If you've updated your console that isn't an option but there's the official digital PS2 games that Sony sell.

What firmware version are you on?
What games do you want to play?

Hopefully you can either use CFW or buy digital versions of the games, if you can't then there might be old tricks like swap disc that could work.

I forgot to mention PS2 Classics Placeholder only works for non B/C PS3s.

You also need ReActPSN to "activate" the placeholder or you will get one of those Cannot Run errors or PSN Store Errors. Forgot which one it was.

Probably easier to find a PS2 and just get one of those boot memory cards and just patch the PAL games into NTSC games?

http://sksapps.com/index.php?page=mis.html

You can find apps to patch your games from Pal to NTSC and also the reverse.

Yea, doing the whole CFW PS3 hacking is dangerous since most people can't downgrade. Chance of bricks too.
Buying a downgraded OFW 3.55 PS3 and having the seller install CFW is much much much much MULCH easier.
After that, updating to higher firmwares are a breeze if you MD5 check all the files.
Switching CFW builds requires software downgrading back to CFW 3.55 but that's also fairly simple if you know how to follow instructions.

CFW from a different build can be installed on top of another CFW. You do NOT need to fall back to 3.55 CFW.

You only need to fall back when doing CEX to DEX or vice versa.

I do it anyway as a precaution though.

Going to a lower CFW actually ReQuires downgrading(Rogero 4.55 to REBUG 4.46)

Going down to 3.55 CFW then moving up can actually create soft brick if you are using a CFW that doesn't have level 1 hash check disabled. I know one CFW that does that, can't remember the name.

As for going down (4.55 to 4.46), you can just install 4.46 on top of 4.55 directly, I did that before with no problem.

I do have a slim ps2 with free mcboot on a memory card- problem was at the time there wasn't any apps that change games from region to region so a majority of my imports (actual discs) did not work.

1. DONT EVER EVER install a cfw lower than the one you are on without doing rogero downgrader...period! Some of these people have no idea what they are talking about! The developers of cfw themselves are CLEAR that you don't do that....ever! it says it right on their instructions! people brick their systems cause they're retards...by doing stupid crap like that!

2. I've probably sold all together at least 80 ps3 slims or more that I downgraded. had 2 bricks...one happened during a not so strong storm and power went out as I was flashing. The second , the nor clip ribbon broke, as I was flashing. thats it! 2 out of 80+ units. Search ebay for member === destromegalis === 700 reviews ...ALL 100% so I may know what Im talking about ...some

3. Not all ps2 iso/bin files can be played ...and unlike ps3 games, ps2 games ARE region coded and ps2 classics has a hard time with imports! ...but if you know what you are doing....its a breeze to get them to play and YOU DON"T need ps2 classics gui on your pc to do it. the ps2 classics manager in the ps3 will do it for you.!!

amazing the amount of misinformation that is STILL given in these forums even after years of cfw being out and by people with thousands of posts...shame

Can't believe after all this time people still have not found a way to get custom firmware on a ps3 that is higher then OFW 3.55.

With ECSDA properly implemented and sanity checks in METLDR, there would have to be a glaring flaw to ever have that happen again. There's a reason there never has and probably never will be any way to install CFW to any system like that.

Everything this person is saying is absolute correct.

For #3, consult this. PS2 Classics Emulator Compatability List
Also I just find it much easier converting it on PC than on PS3 but that's just me.
