vWii is safe, but for now, Wii U mode is not safe, so if you want a possible chance of an exploit earlier, then I suggest you stay on 4.1.0 as long as you can.

Simple workaround would be to hold B to get into vWii mode, then from there go into Wii U mode. Or disable the internet connection.

A good rule to follow if you want homebrew is NEVER UPDATE

Or bypass the Wii U mode by holding B, going into vWii and then back to Wii U, that way you bypass, failing that, turn off WiFi

I wouldn't download it if I were you, since on the changelog it says

Which sounds pretty dangerous for any future possibility of homebrew.

Only if you have standby enabled in the settings.

New Features

A Quick Start Menu is now displayed when users press the GamePad POWER Button or HOME Button to power on the Wii U
Users can start recently played or newly installed software directly from the Quick Start Menu
Wii U GamePad Alerts (special notifications from Nintendo) can be displayed on the GamePad when the Wii U is powered down
Users will be notified with an audio ringtone when a new GamePad Alert is displayed
GamePad Alerts that have been received can also be viewed through the Quick Start Menu
Changes to Standby Functions:

System updates will now automatically install after download when the Wii U is in Standby
Changes to the Wii U Menu:

The User Settings screen now displays when users select their User Mii from the Wii U Menu
The design and layout of the Users Settings screen has been updated
This includes the ability to switch the active user from the User Settings screen
Changes to System Settings:

Quick Start Menu options have been added to Power Settings
Wii U GamePad Alert options are located within the Quick Start Menu options
Changes to the HOME Menu

A Notification icon is now available on the HOME Menu, allowing users to launch the Notifications feature from the HOME Menu
Improvements to system stability and usability:

Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience

Big question, does it affect vWii homebrew?

Great now I can get quicker to LCU but that damn thing still takes more than a minute to load the game. Would've been nice had they thought of allowing people to install the game on a storage device.

Just received it a moment ago.
Fairly big update, so be patient when it installs.
System Menu version 5.0.0 (E)
All in all a nice improvement and the System menu is becoming "mature".
Also I like to note the awesome price point on the Arham Origins batman game on the E shop!
Only 14.99Euro
BTW, MarioKart 8 is THE reason to get a WiiU, especially with the Free game offer.
The game is worth it, actually all released software is top notch to be honest.
As of now I haven't played a single "bad" game.
The library might not be as big as on Wii or other systems, but at least the quality is there!
Most games are on a ridiculous low price offers, it very very hard to resist spending "another"15~20 euro for a awesome game.
Also the eshop is getting better and better!
Owning 25 + games now mostly bought at very low prices , like 11~15 euro or so.

vWii homebrew is not affected by this update as expected.

Quick boot keeps saying "unavailable, turn off the controller and back on again" or something to that effect. No idea what it should be doing.... but its not doing it.

I updated and I like the new quick menu. It also changed a few other things BUT the one thing they still didn't fix was the RGB Full Range bug. If you hook the Wii U up to a receiver(like an hdmi/toslink switch) Wii games will be displayed with messed up colors. Wii games play just fine in 480p though or if you hook it directly to your monitor.

When you first install it make sure you turn off the Wii U and wait until the gamepad's home menu button starts flashing. Press that and the quick menu will be good to go.

I almost forgot about this feature. It was announced at some press conference held by Iwata. Seeing how it was never even mentioned in nintendo directs, I kind of assumed it wasn't possible to actually do. It's installing the update as we speak. And I'm looking forward to using it (it would skim off about half a minute each morning as I use that wii fit u weighing thingy). :)

Hielkenator: I noticed that too. Unfortunately, Arkham Origins isn't a good game to begin with. And you just know in advance that as soon as you buy it, steam sales will kick in and sell it for much less than that. :P

Glad to see this feature implemented so soon. When I hear the term summer, I assume late August or early September.

Be wary of the automatic update installation. I can see it causing issues when a minor update gets pushed and something accidentally breaks our vWii homebrew. I think it can be disabled by turning off standby functions, though doing so would disable quick boot as well.

Same here....it's doing nothing..
Is it updating after the sm update?
Could the amount of games installed have anything to do with it?
EDIT: Nvm, seems YOU NEED TO HAVE automatic downloading of software enabled.
I had standby enabled but that does not sem to be enough.

The system is definetly updating as I can see my USB drive flasing with the system Off.
WORKS!
I like it.
Also like the fact that battery levels are shown for th Wiimotes ( in the Wiiu homemenu ), and the opton to remember passwords on Nintendo ID's
Hate that Netflix and wiiu sports are automaticley pushed to be downloaded.

The automatic update system has been around since last update.
you still have to enable automatic software downloads.
Please note that nintendo will try to push wii sports and netflix on your system by enabeling automatic software downloading.

If I'm remembering correctly then it only downloaded the updates in the background. We would be prompted to update the next time the console was booted up, which is when I would come here to check it's validity, and then either confirm or deny. We are no longer asked to install the update because it does it by itself.

In the 5.0.0 update notes it directly states "System updates will now automatically install after download when the Wii U is in standby."

Just pull the plug...

Look for an option in your receiver ( there should be one for selecting source input )
This is not an fault in the WiiU's sytem.
Your receiver should be able to process full and limited rgb range sources.
Also note that picture quality has nothing to do with this.Generally you should only use FULL range
And depending of the input source.
WiiU has to be set to Limited HDMI black levels.
if your TV suports it, ( Undependend of your receiver! )
So you might want to check your tv settings also.
You should have the same quality on Limited opposed to full HDMI signal. ( PS3 vs WiiU )
Black look as they should if you set the HDMI black levels respectively to full and limited.
It's dependend of the source.
My TV can handle both white/ black hdmi levels. I just set them to fit the inoput source.
Pinsharp HD ( 720p ) and FullHD (1080p) picture! perfect blacks and whites ( somewhat below 65D standards custom calibrated whitespace and colorspace to match the WiiU gamepad )
