Does anyone know if firmware updates are able to block it?

I presume it would work on latest firmware (or am I wrong?)

Depends on how the drive is authenticated. There can be numerous ways to block an ODE, but as it has yet to be released, nothing much can be said at this point.

i know that: the ode need the "dvd key" for works. i think the drive need to be connected to pc (or probably the team release some soft-hack for retrieve it directly on wiiu?).
Who know if WIIU update can flash the fw disc DRIVE like 360 update can do? (micro$oft can flash the fw via systemupdate)

You clearly don't know how a ODE works.

ODE stands for Optical Disc Emulator, this means that you feed data through an serial connection (USB in this case) and then the ODE will pretend that it is an actual disc. Because of the extra hardware, you don't need no dvd-key!

With the 360, you can flash your drive. That is to play burnt games, eliminating the need for an ODE.

Actually evidently YOU have no idea how an ODE works. It stands for Optical DRIVE Emulator; it doesn't emulate the disc, all the info for that is stored in the .iso or whatever disc format, it's emulating the drive that plays the disc. For this, it needs to per-console drive key for the console to recognise and read from it. The pre-order info even states that the drive key needs to be obtained.

Whoops! I did mean drive emulator, but the rest it seems you're right! :P

Quincy i know what ode is.. but the real drive use a key for works.. and need to be paired with mainboard (on 360 ode need the dvd key for works...).
On wiiU the drive have internal key for decrypt game, and u need to dump it or o.d.e never works..
My question is= can wiiU update flash internal drive FW for block ode in some ways?

Probably, but we don't know. We have no further details for it, since a) the product isn't out yet and b) Nintendo has not had any need to update the keys yet. If they made the WiiU in such a way that they couldn't update a part of the firmware, they really made a blunder.

I want to buy one but don't see any UK outlets? TBH I think I am going to wait until the WiiUkey is reviewed cause its quite expensive and also some sort of homebrew might come out instead of waisting your money on it.

here (no good for us though the shipping would kill the price :P)

That is 115, plus shipping, not 100.

you just plug it in between the motherboard and DVD drive i suppose there's a slot there? :P

Ribbon cables dude.

Why are you guys buying this now? Why not have some patience. What for it to come out. What for some reviews. Wait to see if Nintendo responds. By then, a softmod will probably be out anyways, making this useless. The Wii U doesn't have that many good games right now anyways, so you should be able to afford to buy the good ones anyways.

not just that but this is only for piracy thats it. no0 homebrew no softmod and no cfw= pretty god damn shite

unless there are methods of loading homebrew through the ode device but i doubt it

Yes they can depending on the way they built the drive. Look for the ps3, the cobra ODE (www.team-cobra-ode.com) woked with no problems on every ps3 untill the original firmware was updated to 4.55. After that the super slim models (newer ones) need a swap disc in order to make the ode to work. SO yes, nintendo can probrabaly do something either to disable the ode or to make it more difficult to operate.
