The founder of Oculus, Palmer, made 7 promises about the Facebook buyout yesterday. If all or most of these end up true, it probably won't end up too bad for the product. Otherwise, this whole ordeal will have a very negative impact. Since it's confirmed that the Oculus team will be operating independently under Facebook, it's possible that these states will actually turn out to be true. These are all direct quotes coming from Palmer's official confirmed Reddit account.

“You will not need a Facebook account to use or develop for the Rift.”

“We are not going to track you, flash ads at you, or do anything invasive.”

“None of our gaming resources will be diverted.”

“We are not going to lock people out because they compete.”

“Our relationship with the community is not going to change, and we are not going to spy on anyone.”

“This deal specifically lets us greatly lower the price of the Rift.”

“Facebook is going to give us access to massive resources, but let us operate independently on our own vision.”

I still don't understand that why, if they felt the need to sell out, they chose Facebook. I mean surely the likes of Google would have been willing to offer something comparable. (though if I were a betting man, I'd say the creator of the Rift started a price war between Facebook and other companies until Facebook was the one offering the most money at 2 billion.) I would have been so much happier and be so much more relieved if he did sellout to Google instead.

get ready for virtual poking and life-like game requests great, just great
"That is related to something I have been thinking about since I heard about the [Oculus Rift's] flying eagle simulator.

Have there been any experiments with alternative eye arrangements? I'm curious how the brain would adapt.

Imagine chicken vision, dragonfly vision, chameleon vision, flounder vision..."

get ready

How would Google be better than Facebook?

No. Google would be way worse. Google has a habit of buying startups, running them for a short while, and liquidating them when they get bored. Look at their acquation history.

They can control the social media aspects of the rift down the line. Virtual Reality lobbies or whatever they come up with.

I recommend you look into the name Marc Andreessen (creator of Netscape). He's on Facebook's Board of Supervisors and was an early investor in Oculus.

edit: sorry for double-post. Forgot I just posted in here.

Like many others, I'm curious to see whether Oculus ends up staying as separate it sounds it will be.

As someone who has had the opportunity to try a devkit version of the unit (how close this is to the final unit, I don't know, when I tried it I had some lag but I think that should be blamed on the underpowered laptop that was controlling it), I really would like to see this become and remain a successful platform that doesn't involve Facebook harvesting my data and shoving ads in my face.

Put on your Rift and keep watching this.
In the mean time, Facebook copies all your personal info from your PC and spams a billion adds on your profile.

I really really hope that facebook only backs them with resources.
And I hope Facebook it self won't be projected into VR.
Facebook really is creepy...
