Looks like the cat's out of the bag now.

As inevitable as this was, 3DS roms are now able to be decrypted, although the method on how to remains unpublished. Do you now think that there will be a race to release the method of decryption now that the public knows it's possible?

Ping smealum.

There is a lot more that can be done with the 3ds that isn't released to the public. Smea has demoed quite a few things already ;)

Edit: ninja ;o;

Yep, as suspected, he "confirmed" it last month as well: https://twitter.com/smealum/status/432126367644516352

Although indirectly, what he practically said is "to get the models out, you need decrypted ROM data, and I have the models" - you do the math here. ;)

That is true, but you can also rip models from RAM dumps. (I know this because I have done that myself with RAM dumps).

Sure, but that would be terribly impractical and it would require him to actually meet each and every Pokemon at least once to have them in the Pokedex - they have to be in the RAM to dump them from it. Seeing that that's impossible at this point, he must've decrypted the ROM. :P

Yes, decrypting ROM's can be useful for finding exploits in games, yes, it can lead to ROM hacking, provided you can encrypt the images back, and no, it's unlikely that anyone will make use of the decrypted images for ROM loaders etc.

well i can assume the guys working on the professor layton translation hack have also decrypted the game card data.....:ph34r:

but yeah decrypted roms wont "aid" making a rom loader.....that could be done regardless, it would help with game mod's though

Remember he could also modify the RAM to encounter any pokemon he wants to, so not quite impossible. Really impractical for large amounts though, I'll give you that.

Fair enough, I suppose he could do that. Would take days if not weeks or months, depending on the dedication, but hey! :P

Triangles are awesome, so why wouldn't you want to show the almighty power of the triforce?

He did.

They said it was a RAM injection IIRC.

For "large amounts", I think he made a script to extract models.
