Hardware nand flash dump (3ds xl)

I'm having a bit of trouble with an XL, got 200 on the error code and shows up in windows but just refusing to dump, error 400 on another console works fine, but the error 200 console shows up but then says "failed to determine device geometry" or something along those lines when i select dump on win32disk imager, annoying thing is it worked fine before i closed it all up :huh: might have to open it it up and check with the multi meter again B-)
 
I still don't understand why people like to use enamel coated wires for these type of mods and not just simple kynar wire sometimes called wire wrap. Enamel coated wires can be used but it still worries me.

The enamel is not as robust as other forms of insulation so it is not used where it my be scratched or knocked. There are some forms of enamelled wire where the insulation or enamel will burn of when being soldered. This enables the wire to be used on circuit boards and removes the need for stripping the wire before connections are made. However care must be taken when using this wire as accidental connections may be made if the insulation is abraded.

Not trying to make you worry and I agree with gamerquest1 to double check your connections.
 
That is what I normally get before making a dump, so it should be fine. I have taken and restored dumps this way.

Your computer should be recoginizing it just fine. This is going to sound silly but you can try rebooting both your PC and 3DS, get the 3DS back into the boot error screen. What I usually do is connect the 3DS and card reader, then hook it up to a computer via USB.
But how should I dump it when the drive showing up is empty? DiskImager doesn't recognize it either?
 
Wow I didn't know card readers could be so flaky, well then again I throw away those $1 that come with many things. Makes me wish I didn't as I'd have cheap components to make a card sniffer.

The ones I've used include:
Transcend P5 9-in-1 (TS-RDP5K)
Tek Republic TUC-300
IOGEAR 12-in-1 (GFR209)
Transcend Card Reader (TS-RDF5K)

Make sure you connections are solid and wires short as possible :)

:blink: I have the IOGEAR 12-IN-1 (GFR209) it was the sixth one I tried. Did you ge it to work?

Ok, I took my console's back off again and rechecked my solder connections and where the pogo pins are touching the pads. Everything looks good, so why is this not working?

did the person who did the mod test it before they gave it back? you could also try "gently" moving some of the wires to separate them a bit....don't move the too much as the micro usb ports aren't the best things for soldering to and too much force could just pull them off

No, sadly not. I don't want to keep moving the pins around as eventually its going to start scratching at the copper surface (even though they are spherical I have already noticed discoloration where the pins have been sitting) I just wish I could find someone to perma mod it with a micro usb so I can be done with all this nonsense. Im 30 years old, not very good at soldering (which is why I created my solder less pogo pin board) and unfortunately am losing not only a lot of sleep but very little free time I have to complete this

soldering the points to the XL arent too hard, micro usb point is pretty fiddly though.....maybe you could come up with a middle ground and just solder the wires to the XL and then still use your ribbon cable to connect to the SD adapter

Ah if you were around the east coast I'd do it for you lol. But the solder-less approach is very nice, the connection is discoloring? you might want to clean the board and pins with some 91%+ IPA to ensure there is no film on the surfaces of each.

That's a great idea, only again I don't trust myself to solder directly to the board, and I don't want to have to keep opening up the console evertime. (The sd adaptor mod I received won't work in its current state for that and I don't know how to fix that.

I live in Texas. I used to have a friend who went by the name of M3TR01DZ M0DZ (he lived in Florida) who did all my console modding stuff, but alas his phone numbers are no longer working.

If the guy that modded your console did the job right (which as far as I can see, he did) then you should just need to find a compatible memory card reader to finish the job. I have heard of people dumping/writing successfully with error 400

i have had 400 on a perfectly fine setup, read and wrote fine
I could imagine it'd be fine, it's not the initial error as far as I can tell. That's just what the boot code got stuck at when trying to access the eMMC. Since you are plugging them into your card reader the signal then is either floating or might be weakly pulled to gnd or vcc in the card reader before power is applied.

Update:
I dumped my eMMC and caused all the different error codes I listed earlier 003, 007, 200, 400 before reading and they all match CRC/MD5/SHA (take your pick lol). I used my two go to card readers (Transcend P5 9-in-1 (TS-RDP5K)and Tek Republic TUC-300) and even my laptop's internal one to take these images.
 
I opened up the SD-Adapter to find the GND wire disconnected. Looks like it broke off when the case was closed after the soldering. Bad luck I guess :cry:

Ouch, yeah that sucks :( Are you able to re-solder that connection? I hope it's not on the micro-usb port :unsure:

No it's the port, it's the SD-Adapter. I don't know how to solder that's why I gave it to someone to solder it. So any way to fix it without soldering?

I'm afraid not. Take it to your local electronics guy. He or she should be able to fix it.

Wait is it the the port or SD to micro USB adapter? If it's the adapter erm..., not a permanent fix but you could technically get some insulated wire strip both ends and carefully tape one of the 3DS cartridge slot and then tape the other end to the card reader slot assuming it's a metal housing quite risky though. I'd suggest going back to where you got it done and talk to them about it, see if they can help :)
