They made it completely optional so it would have been logical to make Xbox One bundles without Kinect but they know if they do that then no one will actually buy Kinect 1.1.

Its respectable for them to stand by their product, similar to the Wii U to the gamepad but it probably would benefit them a lot to sell them separately.

Dropping the Kinect 2.0 and creating a Core XBox One package would be a good idea, but for now Microsoft tries to price the system competitively instead and bundle it with games, which is also a good strategy. They too have the situation under control - their system is selling well, just not as well as it could sell.

I realize that, which doesn't mean that I have to agree with this move. The customers have spoken, they don't want the Kinect, so Microsoft made it optional from the software side of things. Making it an optional accessory is the next logical step here, whether Microsoft agrees with that or not. Essentially there are users out there who buy an XBox One and never even use the Kinect - it's dead weight that for some is the make-or-break factor when purchasing a next gen system. But hey, at the very least, they're narrowing down the gap between the PS4 and the XBox One so that the customer doesn't go directly to the cheaper alternative in the UK now - here's for hoping that the same thing happens worldwide.

The Wii U GamePad is necessary for the console to work, whereas Kinect 1.1 isn't it's entirely optional so they could've just sold it separately regardless of the profit loss.

Do you think a Firmware update can make the GamePad controller optional ?

Of course, the games that use it will be upset :)

The tablet as far as I am aware is a dumb device that takes video input and outputs control commands. Purely from a technical perspective I fail to see how it would pose a problem, from a usability perspective (though some might it telling I divorced the technical and usability perspectives) you may encounter more issues though they would be far from insurmountable, I mean it is not like nobody has done a single screen UI before.

The games could even be modded out of it though nobody is going to pay for that.

Would they, could they, should they.... potential for discussion there.

I think you'd sooner see Nintendo make a cheaper gamepad than rewrite their entire system interface. Shrink the screen down to 3DS screen size and stick it on something more like the pro controller than a tablet.

Looks like you called it right. Kinect-free consoles coming out in June apparently. On the plus side, they have sold critical mass which would justify creating a big-budget kinect game, if they ever decide to.

Good. I believe that this puts the Xbox One on equal footing with the PlayStation 4. It may have slightly weaker hardware but it definitely has more robust social and multimedia features, so now both systems have an equal chance to succeed. The PS3 and the Xbox 360 went head-to-head, now users of both systems can upgrade on equal grounds... so may the best console win. :)

I hope so - competition only benefits us consumers all the more. Either way, both consoles have sold incredibly (unbelievably?) well. I don't know why people aren't waiting for titles and price drops as most have in the past...but I'm happy about it :grog:. Now, let's see if Morpheus shapes up to be any good!
