As to why they'd spend cash on a real ARM9 core, maybe you ought to consider that those draw a lot less power than it's ARM11 counterpart. (Remember, this is a handheld platform running on a battery), This would have many benefits such as handling specific functionalities at a reduced power consumption while in sleep mode (streetpass anyone?) Or running security management physically separated from the ARM11 cores while having it run simultaneously if required.
Other than that, your guess is as good as mine, although it doesn't change that fact that it's there. You can post whatever you like, at the of the day, there is still an ARM9 core that shows as such on the 3DS using the cpuid registers on top of which you can run instructions.

I see you edited your post above to add that bit of speculation.

Usually, next generation processors are LESS power consuming - unless ARM have decided to buck that silly trend - hey just chuck a bigger battery at it - maybe they thought.

The arm11 cores would also be underclocked for DS mode (espcially the core responsible for the arm7 code) - so will surely be less power consuming than a similarly clocked arm9 or arm7

And my speculation about cpuid is minor compared to your speculation about extra physical processors

Wrecked by the guy who created an unstable bricking version of launcher.dat?

Unstable how? It was infected with a trojan created by Gateway, how the hell was Normmatt supposed to know to search for something like that and fix it?

Obviously you don't know what you're talking about.

He patched some binaries and released it as safe without adequately tracing execution by checking codepaths of his work. He deserves at least some criticism for it.

His patch was basically equivalent to a crack: it disabled some feature of the original software. In cracks this is generally the licensing feature, whereas Normmatt's work disabled the red Gateway card feature.

Any decent cracker realizes the software might have mechanisms that prevent or penalize tampering with it.

ok guys only one way to settle this and tell whos e-peen is the longest once and for all.... you each pitch in $1000 and get the SOC decapped

OMG and LOL I am giving you credit for being the first person I ever heard use the term e-peen.........love it..........I swear if some of this chippy BS wasn't so absolutely hilarious I would quit coming here.....like 1 in about every 20 threads actually offers some useful information or exchange of ideas the rest of it is...Gateway sucks, no clones suck, no piracy sucks.....wait Nintendo sucks huge e-peens for putting out the POS they call WiiU.......

PS....I own a WiiU BTW and am quite happy with it since the second half of last year.....still haven't even gotten to AC4 and just got a killer deal on W101 and DeusEX from BBuy for $55.

No I got them both for 55....so like 20 for W101 and 33 for DeusEX......I actually missed DeusEX a few years ago so figured I would give the WiiU version a try as supposedly they did a good job on the port and supporting the gamepad.

The ARM9 is inside the SOC's die containing the ARM11 cores and the AES/RSA hardware (which the way isn't shown in any public documentations either, which according to your logic would suggest it doesn't exist and that the crypto operations are performed out of thin air...).
It's not lying as another chip visible on the motherboard, so you can't just take "pics" of it.
The fact that you haven't considered this shows that you know nothing about SOC architectures.

About CPUID, as if Nintendo (or whoever designed that SOC for them) was about to alter ARM base registers specifications just for you...

I don't know much about the 3ds architecture but why is everybody arguing with mathieulh about the arm9? I thought it was a known fact that it had an arm9 core (read this http://3dbrew.org/wiki/FIRM) + he said "possibly even an ARM7 as well" .... he didn't say "there is an arm7 for sure!" and as you can read in the link I just posted, at the end it says "It's unknown how exactly DS(i)-mode ARM7 code is run." That being said, why is everybody arguing? mathieulh you don't have to argue with them :S you know more than most of us + you have a cool french name ;)

Thanks for the detailed explanation! ARM cores can be made in many different configurations, but they do seem to have distinct features. Assuming the picture of 3DS SoC is the real production chip, anyone with the experience to identify features from a picture can try to do so.

You never know, that dual core might actually be three cores together.

Here are some pictures of various chip dies with ARM cores.

The sh!t that they pull is what the gov`t and movie and music bussiness would do !!!! Putting a kill code in the 3ds card that's fuc`up scum bags move !!

This place has become a shithole and this whole fiasco is way overblown. I don't want to take sides, but I am going to say I trust the 'reputable members' of this board as much as I trust Gateway, simply because most here seem to have an agenda to perpetuate that Gateway is entirely evil and they will brick your 3DS, just because.

It's really difficult to tell who's honest and who isn't. But it's clear that the vast majority here are just ignorant who just repeat the same nonsense and love to make arguments out of nothing substantial.

P.S. Play ACIV on PS4 or PC as the graphical difference is quite massive... Uhm, actually I take that back; don't play it on anything, the game is pretty shitty, with only positive part of it being the sea / pirate sections.

This is a community with its good and bad apples. Once you blow away the chaff there is quite a bit of good here. If someone has a console related problem, this may be one of the only places to go for real answers.
