This might sound like a rather dumb question, but would it be possible to run emulators right off a SD card with a 3DS or would I have to buy a flash cart?

I haven't been keeping up with the 3DS homebrew scene...

This should be posted here, but to answer your question, no. You can't run emulators off the SD card.

You can however, run emulators with a regular DS flashcard. There are not any Homebrew emulators available for the 3DS just yet.

Currently? No.

If your 3DS is on firmware 4.5 or below, Smealum has released some pretty cool stuff and I expect we'll see more homebrew on 3DS soon. I'd guess that soon afterwards someone will manage to find a exploit for later firmwares. Smealum has managed to decrypt his own firmware, and if he uses his redNand or emuNand to decrypt a 7.x firmware I'm sure that he can find some sort of exploit for it.

Currently, yes and no. There aren't any emulators to run in 3DS mode (besides the ones we have from Ninty), and their aren't any real libraries (besides the beginnings of Smealum's). So, you can run custom code, you would just have a heck of a time making the emulator currently and making it load off of the SD card.

-So basically: No for most of the people here.

We're likely to be able to run 3ds mode emus off the SD card within a couple of months. Proper homebrew is really close.

But you'll need two important things first. One, a 4.1 -- 4.5 firmware 3ds (you CANNOT downgrade to 4.5 with a fresh new system). Two, a DS flash card compatible with 3ds up to firmware 4.5.

The DS flash card requirement only needs to be performed once, as long as you don't run DS mode after its installation (which erases the hack).

Thanks guys. I was hoping I could play 16 bit games on my 3DS, because Nintendo apparently doesn't think we deserve portable 16 bit emulation...

I'm sure the 3DS can run them, it's got a good deal more power than the DS did.

I guess I could buy a Supercard DSTWO and see if it would work.

i bought a dstwo just now to run emulators and it works perfect no need to hack your console just buy the dstwo plug in and enjoy :) hacking scene for the 3ds is in chaos so stay away from it for now and hope for a better future :)

How does one figure out what firmware version their 3DS has? For all I know, I updated past 4.5 already and thus wouldn't be able to use a DSTWO.

You can use a normal DS flashcard IN a 3ds to do this, in fact i use SNES and GBA on my DSTWO.

Theres no 3DS Card that has this yet, but I expect something is probably in the works since people are starting to work on SDKs for Gateway/3DS Cards.
Theres a few videos of people changing screen colors, or writing "HELLO!" to the 3DS screen in 3DS mode, so itll happen in time.

I remember the DS started the exact same way. 3DS is more complex though, will need a bit more time, but its with cards now, its gunna happen. Patience grasshoppa.

I think user member Smealum is working on something as far as an SDK goes, not sure.
