Hey,

Looking for tips and whether anyone else has encountered a similar issue. I have 4 different Wiimotes all with their original jackets. There's only one that I don't use much (it's the Mario edition Wii Remote Plus) and most of the time it's hidden away under the TV in a drawer. It exhibits a really bad smell. The other three (Luigi edition, Zelda limited edition, black one that came with Wii Party U) are in active use and they don't smell bad at all.

I never noticed any odd odors in any of the Wiimotes until today when I took out the batteries for each one to recharge. That's when the Mario edition Wiimote with the red jacket smelled very strong. Almost cheese-like. I always wash hands before playing and my most used Wiimote is the Zelda limited edition which smells nice actually (like soap).

Since it's silicone, treating it with chemicals will just change the odor. But does anyone have an idea of how to get rid of that smell or make it nicer?

Thanks, any help appreciated!

Lol, this must be a trolling job. Away from sunlight=bad. Look it up. Hands might be "clean" when you start to play but you are sweating and then you stuck something away from sunlight. Congratulations, you've figured out mold (or worse, lol).

Ray,

I'm not trolling. :) I understand your point, but really I've only played with the Mario edition Wiimote lightly a few times and tucked it away. My living room is mostly away from sunlight anyway as I live in Finland and there's sunlight hitting my living room for only 4 months in a year.

It's hard to believe it's mold since the Wiimote jacket (or condom) still looks new. Is it even safe to put these in a dishwasher? I can imagine the high heat damaging it, or at least stretch/shrink out of its size. My initial idea was to place it next to a bag of coffee beans, though I'm not sure if that'll help.

Smelled my Mario Wiimote jacket and it's funkier than a black or clear one, but it doesn't really stink to me. Some new rubber items stink up your home for weeks but this is mild in comparison. It'll probably wear off eventually.

Hmm.. Interesting. Maybe I just have a sensitive nose, but the black one I have smells neutral and the Zelda limited edition Wiimote has a clear jacket, which smells good. Could the red jacket on the Mario edition use some funky kind of finish for the color?

EDIT: Will try the dish soap tonight and see what it's like tomorrow.

Update on this matter:

Dish soap worked, but not completely. The smell is still there, just much less pronounced. I tried something and that was to strip all the Wiimotes from their condoms. Guess what? The red Mario edition Wiimote has that same smell on the plastic, but wiping it down with regular water and a damp cloth did the trick. So I'm leaning towards the material being the cause of the smell, it's not just external.

From worst to best smell-wise:
1. Red condom (Mario edition Wiimote
2. Green condom (Luigi edition Wiimote)
3. Black condom (pack-in Wiimote from Wii Party U)
4. Clear condom (Zelda limited edition Wiimote)

Upon closer inspection (sniffing?) I noticed all four have a unique, different odor to them. The red and green condoms have a bad odor. The black one for some reason smells like olives, and I don't eat olives so it can't be from actual use. The clear condom has a very neutral odor to it, but it's silicone so the odor is close to petroleum jelly like Vaseline.

I'm very certain that the coloring process and finishing is what causes the different smells in the Wiimote condoms. I'm actually now leaning towards playing WITHOUT a condom attached, because especially the red Mario edition condom smells so bad it's distracting. I know that plastic doesn't pick up smells like that because I've almost abused the Wii U GamePad and it smells nice. Like I said, I always wash hands before playing.

So... That's it for now haha. The NSA (Nintendo Sniffing Agency) report is concluded.

Played Skyward Sword yesterday with a naked Wiimote for 4 hours. Feels different, good even! I'm not using a condom* anymore :)

*For the Wiimotes, obviously!

My Wii was used, and the condom that came with its remote smelled a bit . I think the previous owner may have been a smoker, though it was just the condom and strap that smelled, not the remote or system and hookups (and the nunchuck was brand new, GS replaced it I guess, still had the protective plastic film on it and everything). I didn't put them in the dishwasher though, I put them in the washing machine. It helped quite a bit, but by that point I was used to using my remote bareback. Even when I later got a remote with motion plus built in, I still don't use the condom or strap on it.

Yeah, I've now been playing with the Wiimote naked and I'm not going back. The wrist strap is there to secure it in my hand, which I like. The only thing to be careful about is not to hit anything or anyone with it accidentally, but since I usually play on my own in the living room on the couch, that's not a problem.

My household is clean and smoke-free and I don't have pets either. When I noticed the smell on the Wiimote was not just on the condom, it became clear to me that it's the material.

ok i used to work in a plastic manufacturing plant the smell most people are finding is contamination in the silicone more the likely from when they clean there molds in the plant. It happens all the time Nintendo has had issues for years like a non smoker getting an snes that changes color or a wii mote condom smelling odd. Ive had a lot of differences over the years just luck of the draw and were you are in the world. fun post thou love the responses in here...
