Can someone PLEASE sticky a thread about how GW's "bricking code" actually works? Everyone is so uninformed and quick to jump to assumptions on this topic it's cringe worthy.

they said that getting the GENUINE LAUNCHER MIGHT BRICK YOU CONSOLE IF IS CORRUPTED.

annoying to see how people get brainwashed to defend other people that dont even know about

Any program that pretends to do one thing, but actually contains a hidden maliciously written piece of code for a secret agenda, is a Trojan. This was a Trojan.
well, it is malicious, right, but only under certain conditions (like when it is on a clone etc) it's their choice to protect their stuff, GATEWAY isn't doing the bricking... it is the clone companies that should patch it out...

anything can get corrupted though, your 3ds could get corrupted over night, a cosmic ray could hit the memory or whatever, might complete your pokedex or give you 99 lives on your mario save, but the chances of something getting it's data altered, and still remaining executable, and triggering the brick code are extremely unlikely

I think its genius, i hope the next time they also include some ransomware:

If you ever want to play 3ds again, send 0.05 Bitcoin to the Gateway reparation fund and we will send you the decryption key !

its like if some doctors would develop a medicine intended for their own hospital but could kill a person if used by a hospital different from their own.

is that ok?

Nope
a corrupted original GW launcher won't load, even if only a few bytes are changed randomly. ive tried over 20 times each time modifying something different. a randomly corrupted launcher won't brick your 3ds.

I think GW it´s only protecting their work, you can´t blame them because other teams are selling their product rebranded without testing.

Write R4i/3DSLink team and demand a solution and a new FW (created by them if possibly)

If true (I personally can't prove it), this would be a PR disaster. Well, ordinarily. But .. a device like this.. meh. Remember that Simpsons episode where Lisa gets branded as a bad babysitter.. then a day later people still want her services?

As I mentioned elsewhere, Nintendo allowed code in Sin & Punishment N64 ROM that would wipe a Doctor V64 BIOS. So think about that and see if it changes your opinion about Gateway's ethics compared to the practices of a seemingly more "reputable" company.

well life and death is not a great comparison to use lol... but, whatever, i mean if the doctor did it that way then so be it. the other hospitals should test the medicine and makes sure it really is safe

but messing with a cart like that is different to messing up your 3ds...
if gateway just like made it so the clones were bricked, or your menu icons got placed in different places, or even deleted all your saves lol, that would be 'ok', but KILLING your 3ds is not cool.

How about this analogy:
Person A always has a peanut butter sandwich in his lunch. (The sandwich being the GW launcher)
Person B has a peanut allergy, He forgot his lunch one day. (The allergy being the clone's ability to brick due to disabling checksum checks)
Person B steals Person A's lunch (Copying the launcher)
Person A tells person B that the sandwich contains peanunts (The GW team warning to not modify their launcher)
Person B eats it anyways, and dies due to his severe allergy of peanuts (The modified clone launcher bricking a 3ds)
Person B's friends (Buyers of clone carts) get angry at person A despite him not deliberatly poisoning person B.

Who is in the wrong here?

So... let me get this straight then...

People are mad at *gateway* for 3DSLink and R4i bricking their console?

Try proving to me that this is something dealing with Gateway?

Did you buy Gateway? Are you *their* consumer? No.

Go ahead. Contact Gateway and yell at them for someone else breaking your 3DS. Do it.

Gateway and its fanboys can try and justify this as much as they please, but they are in the wrong no two ways about it.

Gateway are profiting from theft at the end of the day, you cant complain that your piracy tool or code was pirated, this is the business you are in.

Personally I find the intentional bricking of innocent users 3DS's highly malicious and downright disgusting. Gateway should not be supported by anyone in the know of things in any way from now on.

*You* are the one that said "how can *anyone* be okay..". I'm speaking on behalf of the not-a-whiny-bitch club.

If I woke up in the morning and I had my official GW brick my 3DS, well tough luck. Time to find a new one.

Edit: And, you know, not shitpost all over GBATEMP about it
Well, there are only a few people with bricked 3DSes but most people here aren't bitching about their 3DS being bricked, but about Gateway putting bricking code in their firmware in the first place.
