And it's not about sowing panic. Theoretically it can happen, so people should be aware of it.
You're still free to do as you please, just don't tell people it's 100% save... it is not.

I'd rather park my 3ds until this blows over, then risk a dead console.

Show me although one GW-original user, who got brick,
with such "simple read error". lol

What is the probability of such corruption,
on SD card which is needed to get out of 3DS
only on flashcart fw update.

Don't sow panic.
I feel 100% safe.

The SD card can get corrupted randomly, also its used for loading eshop games from it, there is extra data stored by 3ds on the sd and sometimes used and dont forget that a cheap card can get corrupted any time. I had 2 kingston card which got corrupted and lost most of my data from it, and the cards were never taken out from the camera, nor formate a lot of times or anything like that.

I mean It seems like Gateways post about modified launcher came as a warning for everyone. You don't have to update to the latest firmware. People buying a clone card knew they were not guaranteed quick updates. As for gateway people using this firmware, it doesn't appear after the weeks that it has been out that anyone has been affected by this code, if it is in there. It looked like there may have been one confirmed case, but there was no pictures or proof beyond the post. As a gateway user, I am not really outraged at all. Gateway pretty much said that other firmware is messing up. I feel like this can do 1 or both of two things.

1.Gateway gets more money and gets more resources to support faster and quicker updates
2.Other companies start to do work and breed competition for firmware to be updated faster and better.

Also to the people planning to boycott Gateway, you are only hurting yourself. Gateway has proven itself time and time again. They are not hurting their customers at all. You should boycott the other cards that just copy with no regard for their customers.

They are just slimming down the already small 3DS flashcard market(Only 4.1-4.5 version) with this method. They brick consoles beyond repairs. Yes they may generate more money short term but on the long term they are just killing the scene with every 4.1-4.5 console they brick.

Also its not safe for even the original users as pointed out many times in this thread. You FEEL safe as gw user but its NOT. When you get a brick outside of your own fault you will know.

If they wanted to go down this route, it should have been something annoying, but not dangerous.

Like, if the checksum fails, it doesn't patch whatever it needs to, to get roms to show & have it randomly do it. That way clone users would just fail to load their games at random and may go over to gateway.

Bricking console is going too far. That's another limited exploitable system & potential customer gone.

Do I just power off, remove the R4I card and delete the launcher.dat file from the SD card in hopes that my 3ds will not brick? Do I need to remove the DS profile exploit too? My 3ds has been in sleep mode on the charger since Friday.

Unless someone has confirmed a bricking on original GW card we can't know if they have extra tests to ensure the originals are 100% safe.

People originally said the region free hack was safe - but then it turned out that bricks are reported with the region free firmware - so other code exists to trigger the NAND and eMMC (embedded Multi Media Card) controller reprogramming in addition to the initial stuff reported.

btw someone needs to post a disassembly of the culprit code for this to be 100% confirmed

It can get corrupted if your turn your 3DS off while it writes a save to the SD, too (either in GW mode or with original games).

Or it could just be that your SD card has a random defect. There is at least one user on this board who says that his 3DS got bricked (and he used the GW launcher).

About save thing - the file which could be corrupted in such case i the save file. Not the launcher.dat file.
One person is not reliable for me.

I never said its 100% safe. I said, that I feel 100% safe. Its different.

Theoretically everything can happen. Even NAND can get corrupted. Without any launcher.dat.
Im curious how devices 3ds firmware update is being updated? Downloaded to SD 1st?
If so, then it can also get corrupted, and fck my device. Of course - theoretically.

Guys be mad at R4i/3DSLink.

Guys... NOONE is safe...
A simple read error can cause the checksum to fail, and your 3ds will be dead.
A correct checksum is NOT a guarantee!!!

Correct....

I have an official GW and use an unmodified launcher...
So I should be safe...

However - I can no longer use my GW, why?...

Because SD-Cards corrupt all the time.

Sometimes you switch off whilst still writing to them and they corrupt,
sometimes they die/corrupt from age/overuse,
others corrupt because they are fake SDs...
I've even had corruption from bumping my DS whilst it was writing.

I have loads of SD's and MicroSD's BECAUSE they fail, so I just throw it away and grab another... (kinda like floppies).

So based on my own experience of SDs and Micro-SDs failing, I cannot continue to use my GW, its too risky!!

I'll wait until another cart is produced that is not a clone, and I'll buy that.

This is basically an own goal for Gateway, they scored allright,
but they had just made the <4.5 userbase smaller by killing the only 3DSs capable of using their product!!
as well as pissing off potential punters by bricking their consoles - will those punters ever buy a GW product now?.
Worst of all though, they have made legitimate customers wary of their product!

I understand protecting your own product (even though that logic is flawed, since it's a product that pirates!)
and I would have accepted the killing of a cloned cart, but killing the console, that's just plain nasty!!!

Man this is just terrible. Intentionally ruining other people's consoles? I'm starting to think the Gateway team can't think clearly. I don't know why anyone would be go "OK, Gateway just ruined my $200 3DS, better buy another one and their flash cart!".

Not to mention their ruining their potential userbase by bricking consoles. People using the region free launcher may have wanted to buy a Gateway when they could afford it, or when multirom comes out, etc. Now they can't even do that.

If I knew Gateway would pull something like this I never would have bought one from them. I hope someone releases a non flash cart solution soon and Gateway (and other flashcarts) can die.

Tell me guys, what is the probability of getting corrupted launcher.dat?
Is it a huge, hundreds of MB data? - nope, not even 2mb.
How often are you getting SD out of 3ds?

Games are on microSD - ok. But launcher is on SD, which I never took out after GW update.

So the last question - if anyone here got brick because of "corrupted launcher" with original GW?
Sincerely doubt that. And if after my post I will have several replies like "I have",
then be pretty sure, that it will be clone users, or people related with clone products.

Personally I think that bricking with original GW and normal using
is almost impossible. That was my two cents.

Proud to have Gateway - real product, with real launcher, real made code.
Even with real clone assasinator lol.

What if you just wanted to mess around with the Launcher payload out of curiosity, trying to find out what happens if you change a byte here or here? AFAIK Gateway had issued NO WARNING about the fact that this can destroy your $250 gaming system.

I guess I won't be getting a Gateway 3DS anymore. Looks like a clone card will be my next solution. It's quite the dick move on GW's part to be purposely bricking users' 3DS systems.

btw someone needs to post a disassembly of the culprit code for this to be 100% confirmed

I also would like to see the code.
My trust in the gatway team can only be restored, if they admit they put this code in the launcher and ensure they will remove it. But actually expect either no response at all, or the usual "Only the clones brick, because they are dump. We haven't put any brick-code in our launcher."

Guys be mad at R4i/3DSLink.

A loose contact in my DSTT's microSD slot has caused a boot failure more than once. With Gateway, that console would be dead now.

This sounds like alot of bullshit to me date triggered ??? come on
