If GW plays their cards right, the war just got a lot tougher. Solid multi-rom support with compatibility will decide this battle.

If you don't need multi-rom, you have a number of options, but who can say what future support will be like.

Ultimately, you get what you pay for.

for me thats not just a fancy feature.
Sometimes i have to chose from various games to carry with me (2 3DS games for 2 microSD and one more MicroSD for blue gateway card).

i have not played much of the side missions in games like Super mario 3d land, luigis mansion and zelda ALBW and i know all of those would fit in my 8GB microSD.

im really excited to have that feature in my gateway

It's opinion. Regardless of whether or not you consider it essential, though, multi-rom always becomes standard for flash carts at some point. Doesn't hurt to be the first to have it or among the first.

In the case of MT, however, multi-rom means little with such low compatibility. I know for me personally, there are only 3-4 games compatible with that cart that I'd be interested in loading up on it. And those games would probably only cost me $55 total to buy as retail cartridges.

Yes, but let's not forget that until recently with the advent of emunand, compatibility was low too.

Right now at this very instant, its emunand vs multirom. Promises made by either company should be treated as false until otherwise proven. Arguing that support is coming is pointless. Let's just compare what is currently available.

Are there anyone like me who doesn't really want Multirom? I will enable/install it when it comes out and fill up my sd-card with too many games. When I die or get angry at a game I will just play another one without really trying enough... Anyone like me?

Sorry for making such a newbie post, but I wanted to know. If I'm not mistaken you can already add multiple ROMs to a single SD card right? The only issue right now is having to exit out completely from the firmware in order to play another game?

If so, then multirom just makes things a bit faster?

There is nothing wrong with that, speed is good. :) Just wanted to clear things up because I want to get a cart soon (probably Gateway) and wanted to know what exactly multirom added to the table.

"multirom" has been a feature of every basic flashcart released since (almost) the beginning.
It's hardly a luxury as you try to imply.
It's a basic expectation.
It's a "get what you can" ecosystem though...as with all piracy.

Different people have different thresholds for when piracy is worth the hassle.

Multirom for most, is up there with "pretty darn essential".

For others, it's not really an issue and they will just pirate no matter what.

Solid multi-rom support with compatibility will decide this battle.

I am always wary of such claims as I have seen many and few really played out that way. Granted we now live in a post R4 world where all the kids want to be master hackers that are not inclined to lift more than a finger to help that out but hey.

Things I have seen

Download play with decide the winner. It didn't, possibly as flash carts got cheap and easy so everybody had one but suffice it to say it did not matter.

Compatibility will decide the winner. Broadly perhaps but the R4 rose up to be champion and its compatibility was based on it having updates every other day, carts like the EZ5 with a savelist that ran most games for some years after the last savelist update rapidly dropped the marginally harder to use (drag and drop R4 vs select the appropriate save or download a premade database that anybody could update) savelist until such a time as Nintendo's AP caught up (several years later) and everybody brought it back as "clean mode", "special mode", "ghost mode" or whatever they wanted to call it.

Cheats will decide the winner. Again kind of, most cheat engines were not great things compared to the likes of Nitro Hax, the emulators and things the old GBAtemp cheat crew and affiliates got sorted. That said the lag between cheats going beyond Dipstar and hackers with skills to nitrohax to action replay to on flash cart did have a little bit of an effect.

Slow motion will decide the winner. To this day things are lacking it, granted any half skilled hacker could add it to any game and the likes of DSATM will attempt to add it to any game at the press of a button.

DLDI support. Nobody was kicking up a stink about this and in fact it went the opposite way. Flash cart companies, after being prodded by homebrew types, then dragged the ROM using set kicking and screaming into it, perhaps ironically such a move is probably the biggest +1 to your "drag and drop" concept. Amusingly though before the pre DLDI systems fell apart homebrew support was a thing some took note of, much of that was probably moonshell and some nebulous "other homebrew" remark though.

SDHC support will decide the winner. Everybody more or less brought out a new cart to do it.

DSi support (in DS mode) will decide the winner. This was interesting but I have never understood the "jump ship" mentality (you have a perfectly working DS lite that will work until the DS lite or the flash cart dies, why change?) so I will leave that.

DSi support (in DSi mode) will decide the winner. Granted the DSi being a bit of a flop probably changed things but where is your cycloDS now?

Soft reset will decide the winner. Having never owned a DS lite and had to face its weak power button I have never been one for it, most added it anyway as it is easy enough to do. When soft reset support was lagging for certain carts though nobody complained too hard.

Extra features will decide the winner. This is not the DStwo extra homebrew but things like savestates and walkthroughs. Some liked it but Wood/AKAIO lacked real support for either for years.

In the end "if it can play pokemon, kingdom hearts, whatever mario platformer is the current hotness and mario kart (maybe golden sun and zelda if one of those is happening) less than 24 hours after the scene release the rest of the compatibility can be less than stellar as long as it is near braindead simple to operate" is what makes the winner. This is what the R4 (back when it was updated by the M3/R4 people) seemed to do despite it being an inferior cart in many ways to the alternatives.
All I can really say is it is not clearly superior tech that is still affordable and workable by mere mortals that decides the winner.

I was mainly going off the GBA and DS for that. Link support was usually OK on the GBA or could be fiddled to be OK and the only online stuff that I recall for the GBA slot stuff on the DS was first with the older versions of flashme (sorted before online was truly released to the public) and maybe that some online games did not reset properly after online*.

*my version of Tetris on the EZ4 fails to reset properly. Was always amusing for my 5000 score profile (it reset every time after all) to appear online and wipe out hundreds or thousands off some poor Japanese kid's score.

I for one am hoping that this never happens. With flash carts, cheats are an eventuality. Cheats will break online play.

With the way present hacks are working out it will matter little, assuming someone puts in the time to code it (not a completely mad skills type affair but there enough out there that could do it) of course.

True that. But a part of me wants that to happen since nintendo dropped out from our country i don't really like the idea of paying $100 for Pokemon games just to use some online functions.

My microsd is getting scratched at the contacts every time I insert it into the gateway/sd reader so I think multirom is essential for increasing the longevity of my devices.

I purchased a 3DS XL (mario kart bundle) over a year ago. I haven't opened it yet. I'll buy a Gateway once multirom is working on it. The whole point of a flashcart to me is convenience. I love having dozens of games on hand without any hassle. Once I get into a game, I stick with it until it's done, but having a flashcart lets me try a bunch of games I would never buy and I don't feel bad about ditching a game I am not enjoying. Without multirom support, I would just as soon buy the few games I know I will enjoy or sell the unopened 3DS.

Even that won't work if you're not able to download the patch.

I think it is a convenience, but a well needed one. As of now I have beat like 8 games, but I haven't really gone back and done anything extra because I don't want to be at a point where I am bored of side quests and want to play another game, but have no computer around. I have actually brought my computer on road trips to swap out games because I got a 32 gb in anticipation of multi rom. I'm also trying to beat big game files to save on space when multi rom is made.

I disagree. Gateway has a record of producing the features they've promised. MT lied about several release features. As in, nearly all of them. You have to take them on a case by case basis, not just say apples = oranges. Especially considering MT has given no information on their next update, whereas we already have a video demonstration of some of GW's next update features.

It would be nice to be able to say that all flash carts are on the same level, for the sake of driving innovation. Realistically, however, one or two are always going to be well ahead of the rest until the 3DS scene is considerably older.

Not to mention that emuNAND is not used for rom support at all.

Also, internet support for roms does not mean cheating online, get some sense.

Like in Pokemon the battles are many. Its always about the latest and greatest. I would love to see cool features like CFW, but until the 3DS security is completely cracked this is but a dream. The quicker the community is empowered the faster feats of ingenuity will progress the scene further.
