Gateway only works on systems up to 4.5. Systems up to 4.5 are getting in shorter supply every week, and soon it will get to the point where no more Gateways can be sold because there aren't any more new machines with 4.5 and everyone who had an old one either updated it or already bought a Gateway.

And if Gateway isn't selling any more flash carts, they won't have a reason to produce new firmware for them either. In other words, if we don't get certain features soon, Gateway is going to go out of business and we may never get them.

Our best hope might be if Gateway manages to find an exploit on 6.3 which should give them another year of life....

Well too bad for you if you don't have 4.5 (you haven't even looked there are loads out there). Gateway is selling products and will in the future there is no certain timeframe for 6.3 support (even though most people if they update would be on 7.1 by now)

Look, I didin't update. I have a 4.4 and Gateway runs fine on it.

What I'm pointing out is that the Gateway is going to need updates in the future. At some point Nintendo will come out with a 7.2, 7.3, etc. and Gateway will have to be updated to support that in EmuNAND, or at least support spoofing those. At some point games are going to start containing anti-piracy features and Gateway will need to be updated to handle those. Not to mention that we don't even have multi-ROM yet. If Gateway gets discontinued because there aren't any more 4.5s left, we're never going to get those.

Don't worry, they already got enough money.

And finding an exploit is not that easy. It may never happen again.

the OP has a valid point.. if they can't find an exploit for later versions they are going to have a very small market. I have a 4.5 version and this will affect everyone.

it doesn't matter how much money they have already. Why waste more time providing update and support if there are no new buyers? It will be fine for the next 6 months or so where people can still find the 4.5 versions. But in 1 year or longer if they haven't found a new exploit who knows if there will be any reason for them to put their time into it to support it, which means it could be worthless for new games.

Looks like you better run and grab a compatible 3DS now, before they're all sold out. Besides, by the time gateway gives up support we will probably be running everything from SD card. Gateway or no gateway, we'll still be playing backups on 4.1-4.5 firmware. Take a look at the PS3, an exploit for firmware above 3.55 was never found and that homebrew community survived. I wouldn't count on a future exploit being found for the 3DS, so anybody that wants one better get one now.

Actually they did find a exploit above 3.55 but its hardware exploit

sounds like the OP is trying to justify not taking a risk and buying a 4.5 3DS and a GW card.

To be fair, its a valid point but at the end of the day, anything of this nature is a risk. I just bought my second 3DS and a GW card and for all I know the whole thing could have been stitched up in the time I was waiting for it to be delivered. But for now I have the set up and I can play all the games I have been waiting for, if Nintendo figures a way to block flash cards, or the profitability to the GW team becomes a moot point, I still have that.

The GW team have probably already made enough money to not give a fuck anyway and if they retire to a tropical island and never touch a console again it wouldnt mean the end of development for the card, look at the latest retrogamefan fw that was just released for a number of cards.

Now, off to play a little more Zelda

Except you could (and still can) buy any PS3 bar the few newer models and downgrade it pretty easilly, which doesn't happen with the 3DS. Also, the PS3 scene doesn't depend on a flashcard manufacturer that has to pay for R&D to keep working on patches and fixes.

Alone in my Market are ~50 old 3DS with 4.X so.... don't bet the Market is small ;)
Most people who buy those update to the latest firmware because they don't even know Gateway exists. The Gateway market is already pretty limited as is, there's not enough of an impact on general media and most people don't really know about it. While this is a good thing for the 3DS in general (the minority who wants to pirate can pirate and it won't hurt software sales), in the long run it'll shrink Gateway's market more and more.

Either way, we just have to wait and see.

Unless it's known now that it is, and always will be impossible, don't forget about the possibility of a firmware downgrade feature.

OP has a point.

I have my 3ds on 5.x i think. When i found out about gateway i think i had already updated. I haven't updated it since, and i am waiting for compatibility with my firmware. I am already curious about the miiverse, and a couple of eshop releases. A couple more interesting releases and i will just update it again and forget Gateway even exists.

But please don't forget that this is one of the most unlikely things to happen.

Please don't also forget unlikely ≠ impossible. We're talking about unlikely things here. Is discussing the "less unlikely" option really relevant?

So much this. Playing 3DS ROMs was once "very unlikely" but it's here - while a downgrade option doesn't look very viable now, that's no reason to shrug it off as impossible.

You need to put this into perspective. Guessing the required key(s) won't ever happen, bruteforcing them won't ever happen, and getting them through mistakes made by Nintendo.. is possible. But so unlikely that you shouldn't consider it at all.
