Hardware Intel HD Graphics Driver Install Problems

Howdy all.

So I have an Intel i3 2100, which has an Intel HD 2000 GPU built in. Yesterday, a blade snapped off in my dedicated GPU's fan so at the moment I'm having it sent in for repairs. So I decided to go ahead and just use the HD 2000 so I can still browse the interwebz and shit, but I discovered I never got around to installing the drivers for it. So I went ahead and downloaded these drivers from Intel's website. The setup starts, and has the little progress dots, but after about 5 minutes the setup fails on me. I ran it as Admin, still a no-go. So I tried older versions of the driver...and still a no-go. My motherboard does support integrated graphics, so I went to Biostars website and downloaded a year-old version of the drivers from there. These installed, but when I went to restart my PC freezes at a black screen after the Windows Starting... animation.

I did a little bit of googling, but I didn't find anything worthwhile that would help. Anyone have any ideas?


EDIT: Might as well mention I'm using Windows 7, and my motherboard is the Biostar TZ77MXE

If ur on Windows 7 then there's no reason to get the driver from their site.
Run Windows Update and let it scan and it gonna find the driver for it.
And don't forget to uninstall the driver first because Windows Update won't find it if you have installed it.

And don't forget to uninstall the driver first because Windows Update won't find it if you have installed it.

This is possibly the worst way of updating drivers in the universe - stock Windows drivers are crap and the Windows Update ones are hardly any better. It's best to get your drivers straight from the maufacturer - they are guaranteed to be the latest builds.

I did a quick check of the BIOS, and I didn't see any options for integrated graphics. But it was a quick glance, so I'll check again.

Sometimes newer drivers don't work with the intergrated GPUs, idk the reasons but the stock u get from Windows always work( didn't had any problems with them).

If both fail then go to the Live Chat, they will fix it for sure for you.
And i think there's no reason to change settings in BIOS, if the Dedicated GPU isn't in the PC then its gonna automatically change to the intergrated one (I'm 100% sure that my PC does that) but i may be wrong. Check it anyways.

I think Windows Update provides you with the latest Intel HD drivers actually. It's probably crap for actual graphics cards though. A while ago I updated my Intel HD 3000 using Windows Update, then checked the version with the latest found on Intel's site and the version was the same.

There is no reason why an Intel build of a driver released as Stable for Windows would not work - it's named Stable because it was tested.

As for Windows Update having latest versions of drivers, sure, it happens sometimes, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Checked the BIOS again, and there was an option for integrated graphics. It was set to Auto, though, so it should've been working. I changed it to enabled, though, and am gonna try installing the drivers again. Will report back my findings...

The ones Windows Update find comes straight from the Microsoft Update Catalog. Any and all device drivers that have been WHQL Tested and Certified for Windows, meaning they have been found to be stable - meaning there are certainly worse places you could get your drivers. Of course, the device manufacturer themselves will usually host the most up-to-date drivers, with only significant revisions being sent through WHQL again.

Tom, instead of just blindly running automated installers, install your drivers through Device Manager. Extract the files out of the setup package (usually done when you first run the installer, which places the driver binaries in %TEMP%), and then select your Intel graphics adapter in Device Manager, and tell it to let you manually select the location where the drivers are located (%TEMP%).

It's more of an advanced technique, but it works every time, and avoids any shit bloatware or system services that end up getting install with the automated installer.

You could enable verbose boot logging to find out exactly where a problem is occurring.

Also, just to make sure, you aren't actually forcing Windows to install the driver for the graphics adapter that you believe is correct, right? All you're doing is going through Device Manager and selecting "Browse my computer for driver software" and then setting the path under
"Search for driver software in this location:", at which point Windows then automatically scans that directory and installs the correct driver?

I'm not forcing it, no. Lol, I'm not technologically illiterate, I know what I'm doing

That isn't necessarily true. While they've passed the certification needed they could still display reliability issues. An example of that would be the newer WHQL-certified Nvidia drivers which for whatever reason causes freezes and lockups on 5xx series GPUs and lower.

One of my friends had that too with HD3000 (maybe it was 2000)
He chated on the Live Chat with Intel and got it fixed.
