where would a person who doesn't have the xbox chips go to get these materials? Would a standard hobbyist store work? What is it I am looking for? I am actually realtively comfortable soldering, but will avoid it just to keep my warranty if I can

I have not found a store in germany for those pogo pins yet. A minimum order of ~5000 is a bit too much

Noob question... what are the risks of actually flashing? Like lets say power goes out. Will the system brick? Is there any reason to worry (assuing all wiring was done correctly)?

Depends if it's possible to flash the NAND if it's corrupted.

it should be possible. smealum bricked his 3ds and said he would try to make the hardware mod to reflash the nand.

I soldered wires and the DS won't boot. When I remove the wires it boots fine. I do have a multimeter, but I really don't know how to use it :/ Maybe some guidance?

It doesn't boot or it doesn't turn on at all ?
If it doesn't turn on at all you have a short somewhere, can you get us a picture ?

So I fixed my soldering issues

System boots just fine. As soon as I attach the SD card it boots to blue screen (regardless of whether or not it is plugged into the computer). I am guessing that isn't supposed to happen (when not plugged into the computer). I am NOT getting the popup on the computer that asks whether to format or not (I can't see the DS or card under devices either). Does this likely mean a bad solder on the card itself?

So, soldered up another one (Micro>SD Card adapter). Seems to be doing the same thing.

I had such problem. I just made wires shorter. Of course you have to check, that there is no any soldering problems first of all.

post the blue screen error code as probably a short somewhere. What you describe is completely normal

yes but sometime blue screen shows even when connected to sd card reader and not plugged to computer. depends how you have wired it

What I did for wiring is use two 3-pin computer fan cables (2 pins from each). This way I am able to physically disconnect the SD card adapter from the DS if I want to. When it is NOT plugged in it boots just fine. When it IS plugged in it blue screens whether the card reader is plugged into a PC or not.

I amgetting similar errors as when you mixed up your pins. Can you explain how you used a multimeter to find your error?
