I'm not sure if anyone already posted this or not, but apparently "the original machine made by dekuNukem used a microcontroller and a light sensor hooked up to the 3DS to get into random encounters, and it would then decipher whether or not that specific encounter was a shiny encounter. If it was a shiny encounter, the machine would sound an alarm. From there, the player would then have to come over and manually catch the Pokemon themselves. All the machine was doing was finding shiny Pokemon—and only shiny Pokemon that appear in water locations at that. In this new version which is also designed by dekuNukem, not only will the machine try to actually try to catch the Pokemon for you, it also works on land, too. You can "select two types of Poke balls" according to dekuNukem, and after encountering a shiny, the machine will "throw the first [Pokeball type] once, then the second type 3 (configurable) times. If all fail then the alarm is sound, else keep finding." So the alarm is still used in this case, but it's a last resort type of situation—ideally, you can catch the shiny without having to be present."(source: http://kotaku.com/woah-someone-built-a-machine-that-finds-shiny-pokemon-1458895118)
Also here is the video found in the article:

What do you guys think of this? And in your opinion, does devices like this ruin the game for you?

This is already 2 weeks old. The first version only ring an alarm when a shiny is encountered. New version auto catches as well.

no, it not ruin anything for anyone
its just a shiny detector , there is no cheating here

Well it really depends on which side of the botting debate you are on;
I for one love bots but i can see how this would ruin ones sense of accomplishment.

This is awesome , maybe the creator will get a small camera and have his arduino do some ocr and have it breed optimal specimen :)!

Also, considering that you will most likely not be able to use it in battles it's harmless, only useful for collectors.Breeding is also out of the question, because breeding one is probably the same as finding one.

Can't be said about pokemon with legit stats,after-all the only thing you should care about is online battles.Who cares what everyone does with their single-player experience ?

Like I said, only people who just want to have every shiny pokemon collected will find this useful.

Im seriously confused about what you are trying to tell me.

The creator could automate all sorts of things like IV Breeding, EV Training or soft reseting legendaries until he has the stats he wished

Why should you not be able to use these pokemon in online battles ?

Oh I thought you were comparing them to pokegen'd pokemon with legit stats.

First of all,not everything is as simple as it looks, you can see he is using a light sensor to determine the shininess of the pokemon(because during a shiny encounter the lower screen stays black),so not everything is so simple, especially breeding.

Anyways, any sort of cheating is frankly harmless, because in the end wi-fi battles will be flooded with perfectly bred pokemon,do you care how they got their pokemon ?Why should you ?You enjoy your experience,he can do whatever he wants,as long as he passes the legality checker.

as far as I know this device was wired to the buttons.

Then it checks the audio signal constantly while sending up and down press signals.

When a normal "wild-battle" sound is recognized it will simply flee from that battle and continue to walk up and down.

If however that "special-wild-battle" chime is detected it will catch the pokemon.

I appears that the person doing this didn't even have to waste so many lines of code on this contraption.

Idea: nice

Useful ?: not really.

I'd like to thank the OP for, you know, having a title that depicts something already "released" and not a proof of concept, and actually including that in the post.

When a normal "wild-battle" bottom screen blackout duration is recognized it will simply flee from that battle and continue to walk up and down.

If however that "special-wild-battle" bottom screen blackout duration is detected it will catch the pokemon.

Not really. In the friend safari it doesn't take that long to find a shiny.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
