So we all know the PS4 is coming with the super secretive but cool GAIKAI streaming service, allowing Playstation owners to stream PS3 games on their PS4's. Not much has been revealed about how the process works, but many have speculated that Microsoft would possibly have some kind of service as well to combat the GAIKAI.
Enter, the words we all love hearing about so much, "The Cloud".
Microsoft is, as suggested, working on a game streaming service akin to Gaikai and OnLive, according to insiders close to The Verge. It's very much a work in progress, apparently, and is being designed principally to stream games to Windows devices, but Xbox One compatibility seems all but inevitable, given the PS4's movements in this area.

"There are so many things that the servers can do," he said. "Using our Azure cloud servers, sometimes it's things like voice processing. It could be more complicated things like rendering full games like a Gaikai and delivering it to the box. We just have to figure out how, over time, how much does that cost to deliver, how good is the experience."

So let's keep the following in mind here, this service most likely won't be finalized around the time Playstations GAIKAI comes around. They still have a lot of kinks to work out. (At the current moment the game is being streamed to a laptop setup, but xbox one integration is inevitable according to Microsoft employees).
But at least we know it's in the works. It's especially reassuring to me as someone that has a multitude of digital 360 games.
Also, let's try to avoid the Xbone'd comments/ "THEY'RE STEALING SONY IDEAS" comments.
These kinds of services are extremely neat to think about and I'd much rather discuss the service over the tiring Console Wars.

THEY'RE STEALING SONY IDEAS.

But everyone steals everyone else's ideas, so yeah.

Also, Console Wars: let's discuss them.

*ahem*

Sorry, had to get those out of my system because of your forum title. Anywhoo, I'd love to see how this works out, and how they eventually ruin it.

"Anything you can do, I can do better! I can do anything better than you!"

In all fairness, this s the great thing about competition in the console market. If Microsoft can put together a competent competitor, Sony will have no chance to become complacent. Both companies will have to stay on their toes, working to make their respective services better and better. In the end, it'll be the consumers that win.

So, yeah. I have no interest in the Xbone, but I hope this is more "Cloud Nine" than "Cloudy With a Chance of Man-Meat and Balls."

Good for M$... But I don't think a lot of people love hearing anything about "The cloud", me included.

Streaming this, streaming that... It's just a big disaster waiting to happen. People having no control over their own purchases, servers going down, latency issues, slow/no internet connection, random bans for reasons no one understands, abusive pro-company contracts and ties, lack of preservation of software, limited library.

Maybe I'm just a negative fuck, but when I heard that PS4 wouldn't have retro-compatibility at all, it really bogged me down. I have no money to buy a 6 hour game each month for inflated prices, let alone pay for another service so I can play games I already own with the aforementioned issues. I'll just stick with what I have for the time being until a better solution comes up or I see myself getting my money's worth.

And now M$ is jumping ship on this? Man... Do they never learn? People WILL prefer offline compatibility even if they have to pay extra for an add-on, than getting online always streaming crap that God knows when or if it will even work right.

Just my humble opinion on this whole "Cloud" business. I just hope it flops hard like Simcity did.

If Microsoft came out and said "Xbone WILL have offline retro-compatibility" I can assure you that sales would go up exponentially. Always considering if it's even a possibility of course.

Microsoft is so desperate, that they are copying even dumb ideas. Just do backwards compatibility, simple as that.

Sure, I'd totally love paying the extra $120-odd (price of XBox 360's hardware minus the case and the drive as the XBox One already has those) on top of the already hefty price of $499 for the sake of backwards compatibility with the XBox 360, a system I'm likely to already own since apparently I have a library of 360 games that totally necessitates such a feature. Because a price tag of $619 is totally acceptable and wouldn't doom the console day 1. :yay:

No. Backwards Compatibility as a feature is merely icing on the cake - it's okay to include it when the architecture used for the successor is compatible and including the feature would not cause serious design problems (overheating of the system, overall bulk etc.). When including Backwards Compatibility does nothing except inflating the price, it's not welcome and shouldn't even be considered, let alone implemented.

The original PlayStation 3 was the result of such a misguided way of thinking and all it amounted to was a ridiculous price, considerable bulk and high failure rate, all for the sake of playing games for a last generation system that everybody and their dog already had anyways. People often yap about how they miss this feature of the PS3 but at the end of the day, the system began actually selling once it was removed, allowing for a serious price cut and now with the dawn of PS2 Classics as well as cheap-as-dirt aftermarket PS2's, the issue is practically non-existant.

If you have 360 games that you'd like to play, play them on your 360 - you likely already have one. If you have 360 games and don't have a 360, what's wrong with you? The argument that you could "trade your system in to take a notch off the XBox One's price" falls completely flat on its face when you sit down for a moment and contemplate that you'd get a $120-odd for your pre-owned system tops, which is exactly as much as Microsoft would have to charge you extra to even include the feature in the first place.

Microsoft released a new and affordable budget 360 - if you don't have one yet, invest in that. Don't buy a next generation system with the intention of playing last generation games - that's just silly, buy it for next generation games.

Now if they add the odd rare game into the service, this could be a gem for many. It's not like the current consoles will last forever, regardless of the way you treat them. Electronics just tend to fail at some point due to wear or even an accident (sudden power surge that fries everything). As Foxi4 said, if someone really needs backwards compatibility, buy the (or keep) the previous gen console. Some games may be playable on a future machine, but since next gen architecture is now vastly different compared to the current gen, I highly doubt they'll be playable in the next few years.

Don't expect whatever this system is to be out anytime soon - it's clearly a rushed response to Gaikai because Microsoft realized they're in the sh*t as far as streaming games is concerned.

For starters, it doesn't exist - Gaikai as a system existed before, it was merely acquired by Sony and is now re-designed to work within their infrastructure. What Microsoft is doing now is "looking into the possibilities" of implementing a similar system, which by definition means that they don't have one ready and won't have one ready for a long, long time.

Secondly, the source mentions "Windows-based devices" and an "inevitable compatibility with the XBox One" - this is pure speculation. The wording is meant to be confusing, as it practically means that such a system is a work-in-progress for Windows - XBox One compatibility is "to be expected", not "guaranteed".

In other words, what they're saying is "Don't worry guys! We'll totally catch up... at one point! :yay:" which is hardly a selling point "here and now", just a concept that's being worked on which may or may not be implemented.

To be fair they have done a great deal with RDP and 3D/directX so I am sure I can quite get to MS are going in completely cold.

I have absolutely no doubts in terms of Microsoft's coding prowess, I'm merely underlining that it's not a feature of the XBox One and shouldn't be considered one until... well... it "exists". :tpi:

how about stop blasting each other about who's got better cloud services and fucking announce the COST or FEE. The way they are keeping us in the dark scares me in how much this Gaikai is actually going to cost
