Rootkit? What are you talking about?

This reminds me, I need to log into my MapleStory account and start playing again.

GameGuard hides the game application process, monitors the entire memory range, terminates applications defined by the game vendor and INCA Internet to be cheats (QIP for example), blocks certain calls to Direct X functions and Windows APIs, keylogs your keyboard input, and auto-updates itself to change as new threats surface.
Since GameGuard is effectively a rootkit

Yeah, pre-BB is my nostalgia boat. Now you toss cash at the in-game shop and win.

To be fair, MapleStory is by no means the only online game that employs tools like this. AFAIK many of those Asian Free2Play MMOs do this.

True, but I recall reading somewhere that it is because a company has a monopoly in security over in Asia, but icba to remember where or who it was.

many mmos install nprotect. and its probably good that they do, theres so many cheaters in there. its weird how they keylog you, but there's probably a reason for that as well

Rootkit is about malicious software, one that intends to do harm (like worm, virus, etc). nProtect is an anti-cheat software (a lot of people cheat in MMO). These software do keylogging to compare what you typed and what they receive. It is one way to catch hacking/trainer.

Even if said software is meant to protect against cheaters I'd consider such invasive measures used in my computer malicious.
