Okay, so I've been following the PS3 CFW scene for a few years now and after much research I am still a little unsure about a few things. Back in 2010-2011 the only way you could install a CFW on you PS3 was if it was on OFW 3.55 and I though that was how it still works but I've come across some sites that say otherwise.

I know there are a lot of fake sites and tutorials out there but a while back I heard about KaKaRoTo's work with the PS3 4.0 HEN, and I think that's kind of gone to hell, but I also stumbled across this article written in October of last year that says the PS3 was hacked for good (here). Then you have the numerous YouTube videos that say all you have to do is copy a UPDATE.PUP file over and bingo your done (which I always assumed was crap) but after researching a lot I really don't know what to make of all this.

Is it really at all possible to install a CFW on a OFW higher than 3.55 without a flasher, or is this just a hoax, to be frank, after seven years, it doesn't sound like too much to ask. On a side note, if it really is only possible with a flasher, do you think that the release of the PS4 would cause Sony to stop updating the PS3 i.e. make it easier to hack?

Thanks for reading

PS3 Custom Firmware are now possible past fw3.55, but most (if not all?) consoles require that you are in 3.55 before installing a custom firmware.
Not all consoles allow downgrade, so before upgrading/updating your console, please read and understand if what you are doing is correct. you may be unable to downgrade without buying an hardware to flash your console's NAND/NOR chipset.
Yes it's possible. How? I don't know, but it's possible.

Here you go.

As of now, if you own a PS3 with OFW above 3.55 you'll need hardware to install CFW.

The 3k3y and Cobra ODE are supposed to work on all PS3s as well as launch homebrew. However they don't install CFW.

(3k3y is out but is supposedly getting a update to allow it to work on all PS3s soon, Cobra ODE has yet to be released.)

Okay, so if I understood this correctly. The only way to "hack" a PS3 after OFW 3.55 is to either use a flasher or buy/install one of the Optical Drive Emulators you mentioned. Thanks for the reply, I think I get it now. On an off note, do you think it's better to wait for the Cobra or just get the 3k3y since it's compatible with my PS3?

Work on all as in you can be on latest firmware and run isos?

Yep, and I wouldn't get the 3k3y until they throw out the update that allows it to dump your PS3's drive keys. (Right now to use it you have to get a PS3 on CFW, dump the keys using homebrew, and then throw them on the 3k3y. After that update to OFW.)

And the Cobra ODE hasn't been released yet, so right now it's a waiting game.
