Edit: nope, apparently an unsubstantiated rumor that took off.

The kinect, previously an optional extra for the 360 and one that though it sold well otherwise failed to capture a great audience, had its successor for the Xbone added in the box and thus made mandatory for all machines. Though addons tend to be better when they are universal it was seen as the thing that sent the price point far higher than the PS4 and the kinect is not seen as a great addition to "gamer" games. Some also voiced privacy concerns, because no other console has a mandatory camera, but such things were usually dismissed.

- BREAKING: @Xbox media relations confirms to me via email that #kinect sensor IS NOT required for #XboxOne.

- .@Xbox confirms NO #XboxOne price drop due to NO kinect requirement. #XboxOne is "competitively priced" & xbox is "confident with the value.

Ooo, that's nice, though, as far as I'm concerned the kinect is still a gimmick, and until they can convince me otherwise, I see no point in buying XB1 bundled with kinect. I will probably pick one up solo when I do decide to buy one.

Microsoft is really trying hard to patch up all the mistakes they've made with their fans. I say good on em, they keep it up and they may be back in the race after all~
But this is a (very unlikely) rumor. As I said before, MS just said yesterday that the Kinect is a necessary part of the system and won't be removed.

While true, they also said they had no plans of reversing their DRM policies and used games policies. Which they did overturn. I'm sure they could just as easily retract the forced kinect policy~

It might not be required for the system, but they'll probably still bundle it with everything. The only way you probably will be able to get an xbox without kinect will be to get it used. And I'm sure some games will be a lot better with kinect integration now that they know 99% of their gamers are going to have it, instead of like 1%

1) It's not a policy, it's part of the hardware.
2) They retracted the DRM policy after months. It's been 24 hours.

"This rumor is untrue and was an unfortunate copy/paste mistake by a member of our team. We’d greatly appreciate you running the correction below as an update to your story to help quell this rumor and shutdown the false cycle."

Will there be a model of the new xbox available for purchase which doesn’t come bundled with the sensor bar?

No, the all new Kinect is now an essential and integrated part of the platform. By having it as a consistent part of every Xbox One, game and entertainment creators can build experiences that assume the availability of voice, gesture and natural sensing, leading to unrivaled ease of use, premium experiences and interactivity for consumers. We are very confident with the value we provide at $499 and the unparalleled, all in one games and entertainment experience that Xbox One offers.
