I've found a PS3 Slim 320GB on 3.55 w/ cables, but no controller, at 265$. I know I can get a Slim 120GB at $180-$220 lately on ebay, but for 200GB more and no fuss of upgrading a 120GB unit to a bigger HDD, is the $65 more going to be worth it for 200GB? Also if I'm looking in the wrong places, any insight is appreciated. I'm not opposed to installing a bigger HDD myself, but as far as the manufacturers go, I don't know who is good (or rather who to stay away from). Where as this 320GB PS3 LOOKS like a good deal to me, to someone who knows about PS3, it might seem that this is a rip off. I'm new to the PS3 scene but I've done just about everything on Wii, PSP, and NDS. Absolutely any input here guys.

Amazon is magical. The 250GB version comes with a game (Uncharted 3) and is $270:
http://www.amazon.com/PS3-250GB-Uncharted-Bundle-PlayStation-3/dp/B009CYJ8SA/ref=dp_ob_title_vg

And if you really want more space or you don't care for Uncharted, there's a 500GB bundle with Assassin's Creed III for $300:
http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-500GB-Assassins-Creed-Bundle-3/dp/B0050SWQ86/ref=sr_1_2_title_4?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1370790940&sr=1-2&keywords=playstation 3
Or 500GB with Gran Turismo 5 and Infamous 2 for $300 as well:
http://www.amazon.com/Computer-Entertainment-PlayStation-Legacy-Bundle-3/dp/B00CC50QT6/ref=sr_1_2_title_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1370790940&sr=1-2&keywords=playstation 3

Given that these all come with a controller and are all brand new, these are all better deals than the 320GB one you found. The controller alone goes for around $40, not to mention the cost of the games included in the bundles raise the value of these deals.
Personally I would go with the 250GB Uncharted 3 Bundle. Even if you manage to get a 120GB on ebay for around $200, it's definitely worth the little bit extra to get a brand new system along with a game, not to mention double the space.

I assume you want the 3.55 PS3 so you can install a CFW. Well, I sold my PS3 in January, that included - cables, CFW, 160gb hdd, and no controller - for $200 shipped. I thought I got a pretty good deal out of it. If I were you I would not pay over $225 for a PS3 with CFW or 3.55.

Except if he wants to get a CFW console. All new consoles are immune to the current methods of getting a CFW installed..

As for the console, if you're thinking of changing the HDD to a 1TB one, it's kinda moot what you have inside the console. If you're paying the extra $65 for just the 200GB extra in the HDD, I'd just buy a cheaper (and smaller HDD) console. 1TB HDDs go for around $80 (example). That's 680 GB more for $15 compared to the 320 GB. If you're going the CFW route, go for max space. It never hurts with bluray disc sizes.

I agree. Try not to buy the hard drive with the console, the seller will try include the hard drive with the console so he can sell it at a higher (most likely overpriced) price than he can get for the bare drive.

Thanks guys, very helpful information. Yea, I thought about it a while myself and tried to find the size range of games, after learning this I realized...there are already 60+ games I've wishlisted that I could never hope to fit on just 320GB.

So as far as upgrading the HDD goes, I'm looking at this..
http://www.amazon.com/WESTERN-DIGIT...ATA+3.0Gb/s+2.5"+Internal+Notebook+Hard+Drive

Which I believe is the same unit Qtis gave an example of (finally going to burn through some Amazon gift cards). Anyone have anything bad to say about Western Digital with regards to the PS3 (I've heard of other brands causing slowdown)? I have a 1TB WD External for my Wii and it's really done well for me. Although for the Wii it was overkill. Could have done better there with a 250GB considering the size of the titles.

Seagate or WD are both good. Actually they're almost the only manufacturers left (well the largest anyway). I've got the HDD you linked inside my PS3 at the moments and couldn't be more pleased. Sped up my PS3 compared to the stock 160 GB and so far haven't hit the limit (PS+ games downloaded automatically etc). Also have a huge game library on disc. When buying the HDD, just make sure you buy it with warranty just in case. Also keep the PS3 in a well ventilated location, since gaming from the HDD tends to heat the console over a long period (as is with all electronics). It'll auto shutdown after it gets too hot, but still it's easier to avoid the thing with keeping it outside of a box..

Glad to hear it. I always like hearing good things about WD because it's all I have bought over the years. So I'll be taking on this little adventure when I get my unit in a week or so; and then I should only have CFW related questions..but hopefully few to none as it seems just a little more involved than my Wii was.

Oh I forgot to ask something. So In joining this scene so late, I get to read over a lot of dated material. With current CFW like Kmeaw and Rebug, is there still any risk of bricking your unit? I know on earlier CFW it was a gamble for some. Also, what would be the best CFW for the sole purpose of playing my backups?

When installing CFW on the PS3 the chances of bricking are very low, you shouldn't be worried.

Update: Believe it or not I've slept on that 265$ deal and decided to go with a more trusted seller for a 120GB Slim for 280$. After looking into the horror stories of eBay, I've decided that going with the highest rated seller of 3.55 PS3s, being guaranteed satisfaction, outweighs the possibility of being tied up in returns for a month. I suppose I'm paying 25$ for peace of mind now..

Update 2: The 280$ deal fell through, and it's a funny eBay story! So this guy put up a 300$ or best offer deal for his stock of 3.55 120gb PS3s. I offered 250$ because that's around where I'm comfortable, and at the moment, that was all I could spare towards this endeavor until being paid 2 days later. So this seller rejects the 250$ and makes a counter-offer of 280$...acceptable..just not immediately affordable. So I planned to let this offer sit unaccepted for the allotted 3 day period before it is erased... After 2 days pass I go to check the auction only to see that this seller has removed the offer, taken down his 3 auctions (of 120GB, 160GB, and 320GB PS3's on 3.55), which he then re-listed at upwards of 500$. The funny thing being that he is now asking ~500$ for a 160GB or 320GB, and (here's the kicker) a whopping 560$ (literally double the offer) for the 120GB I planned on buying. I tried to message and he had blocked all messages. I tried to make another offer of 280$, and he had changed his settings to only allow bidders who have purchased 2 or more items. So this guy has clearly thrown a temper tantrum and think's he's hurting me but...I have a friend who works at a pawn shop who just scored me a like new 120GB for ~100$ on her discount, so...I think I know where to go from there...you got me bro!

The eBay seller I inadvertently made throw a temper tantrum is Orkmastermcgee. I saw him recommended before on other PSX sites, but don't deal with this guy...it's not worth it, especially for the price. There's a ripoff report somewhere on google you can find claiming that he kept a buyer in returns on a product long enough for eBay's transaction period to end, clearing him of all obligations.

The Solution for Anyone Interested: Looking to get yourself a unit on 3.55 without getting taken? Let's look at what this horrid eBay seller does for a living (Orkmastermcgee). This guy went out and invested in the required hardware to flash PS3's, probably set him back a little over 100$, one time purchase. Now all he has to do is find the correct models that are capable of reverting to 3.55 OFW or lower, and flash them. These particular units? You can score 120GB 160GB and 320GB PS3s for ~125-150$ at pawn shops all day long, with cables and a controller included in MANY cases I've personally seen. So, let's say you get one at 150$, you now need it flashed and you do not have the tools. The median price of eBay sellers offering downgrade is ~60$ both ways, and if you carefully read feedback and know how to spot fake feedback, you should be pretty confident before sending your PS3 off. 150$ + 60$ = 210$. I'm telling you, you can have a PS3 on CFW for 210$ or under. If you were to buy a 300$ 3.55 PS3, that means you're letting these chumps (Orkmastermcgee for example) get paid ~90$ for their downgrade service. Eh...who do you even know who gets billed out that high hourly? Especially when considering that I could teach a 5 year old to flash PS3's for me in a South American sweat shop in WELL UNDER an hour. Yea...leave eBay mostly alone if you want my most researched opinion. So to recap..

1. Stay away from Orkmastermcgee and generally anyone who wants to take something from you that they don't deserve.
2. Buy correct model PS3 from pawn shop (hoping to find a PS3 naturally on 3.55 is quite unrealistic this late in the game.)
3. Select a downgrade service with excellent feedback and fast turn around.

Edit: Should also mention though, that deals around 200$ for a 3.55 PS3 do occasionally surface through bidding, but never for Buy It Now. This is rare, completely luck, and making the last bid. Also these people are usually just getting rid of the one they owned in preparation for PS4. These sellers might not be very professional and when you get the box, you might see that the packaging created a nice bounce-castle for your unit in the shipping process.

Or Cobra ODE can just mystically come back to life 2 days ago without me knowing and make all of this moot.

Seems like a better idea than CFW because of less screwing around patching and whatnot. I'm not sure the homebrew for PS3 is all that compelling, either.

(Yes I know they have a ton of emulators but I don't think it's anything you can't do on your Wii)
