Minecraft-maker Mojang has released an early version of its newest game Scrolls.

The battle game pits two players against each other who fight using heroes, artefacts and spells from a virtual deck of cards.

The open beta or test period for Scrolls started on 3 June.

As with Minecraft, those who buy the beta version, which costs £13 ($20; 15 euros), pay a reduced price and get future updates for free.

The game revolves around a virtual deck of cards that players acquire by trading with other players or by spending a virtual currency, called gold, which they amass as they battle. Players can also convert real world cash into a separate currency, called shards, to help them build up a decent deck of cards.

Doesnt look like my cup of tea - but is cheap enough to give it a go i guess.

Yes indeed, maybe Mojang would've been a better choice of word. Then we could've clicked blindly on said thread having no clue who we were talking about.

Wow... maybe this is not what I was expecting. How the fuck do you go from building an entire new genre to... you know... this? Generic online TCG with microtransactions... smooth. How come nobody ever figured that genre out, eh? :glare: Not like I am a big fan of Minecraft or anything, but the step away from innovation is just to big to ignore.

Any of them sell 20 million copies and spawn a dozen now well-established derivative games? Terraria is a best-selling Minecraft-style sandbox which isn't based on voxels, but would otherwise not exist without said game's heavy influence. Your proposition is akin to asking if there weren't 3D action-adventure games before Ocarina of Time. They did, but it's not like it matters once one games comes and consolidates the genre.

Consolidation and creation are two waaaayyy different things.

If you want to say Minecraft is popular and created loads of spin-offs thats one thing. But building is hardly the right word.

And I would love to see this 'dozen' of well-established games Minecraft inspired. Other then Ace of Spades and Terraira I havent heard of any other 'minecraft-style' that are even nearly as popular as it, and im being nice about Ace of Spades, its only really popular among dedicated Minecraft players)

What is so bad about it? ...cause people think that it would be overshadowed by other card games or it somehow seems too ugly/unpolished?
(just trying to understand the main reasons of disappointment in here)

They didn't really build the genre, they really just raised the platform, but the platform has arguably raised higher than Minecraft with games like Terraria and Cube World (Name not final).

Mojang is going to crash and burn. Minecraft might have somehow become a sleeper hit, but Markus Persson does not deserve any of the praise that's constantly heaped on him by fans and the gaming press. Minecraft was a horribly made, unfinished, and broken game that was pushed out the door in Beta and had a "final version" label slapped on it.

Scrolls...I'm sure that will be a huge success. Spend $20 to have the opportunity to pay micro-transactions to Notch so you can play with pretend cards on the computer....sounds fun.
