Hacking Update to 5.X

Hi,

I just got a 3DS XL and heared a lot of people saying not to update to 5.X as it fixes the kernel-exploit. Now I happened to come across this theard which leaves me a bit unsure. (It could well be that I don't get all of it because english isn't my first language.) Doesn't that mean that updating to 5.X is fine as long as you are not a developer? They won't release the kernel hack anyway, and the future exploite (if there will ever be one) should still be in 5.X and therefor I should still be able to use homebrew on my 3DS once it is released, right?

its up to you
its not that the initial exploit was patched (because the exploit is on game carts)
but the code execution exploit it lead to, other hacks could be made and then use that same code execution one

yes the current people have sated they arnt releasing there version doesn't mean another wont appear

i do bleive no other code execution exploits have been found currently but again we cant see into the future
but more than likely the first Code execution hack we do see will use the 4.5.0-10 & Lower first due to that having been looked into the most

Staying on 4.5.0-10, I am not missing out on anything since I don't use the eShop.

My advice: keep 4.5 until you need to update for a game you want to play.

I personally did upgrade my console as I want to play new 3DS games and eShop stuff.
It is more of a personal decision: if you can stand only playing DS (retail and flash card games) and 3DS games from 2012 and older, and don't want any eShop stuff (Virtual Console, DSi/3DSWare) and don't want to play some games online (i.e. Mario Kart 7 which needs an update from the eShop), for god knows how long (nobody knows when and if some form of the hack mentioned will come out), then you should stay on the firmware version your console comes with.
If you said "no" to anything above you'll need to update sooner or later, unfortunately.

That is also my suspicion. But if one does not want to play newer stuff etc there is no harm done staying on 4.5

if you won't play online mario kart 7, newer 3ds games came after 2012, virtual console games, free demos and full retail games from e-shop, dsi wares, 3ds wares etc, you might as well buy a DS at below half the price and you will get a very close experience.

it is meaningless to stay on 4.5 for a hack that will most possibly never come.

The other 3DS games currently don't interest me at their current prices (including EShop).

Why should I change anything at all?
Updating beyond what the newest of my games requires (currently 4.2 iirc) is useless and buying a DS would be totally retarded (what for?).

Only if in the future should I want a game that require a newer update things change.
Then I will consider the updating or not question.
But until then staying on the version I have is the best choice by far.

Wasn't it even something like "pay 10 Euros more, get a 3DS instead of a DSi" when you bought it? Nintendo is rather notorious for taking very long till they drop their prices a little. Go to a store and look at the price for Super Mario 64 DS (DS launch game).

second hand DSes are dirt cheap where i live. i bought one for about 25$ in great condition including the case.

also if i am not wrong, you can't get the update for nintendo letter box (known as swapnote for ntsc systems)

even being unable to get free demos alone isn't worth it imho. i have about 10 demos on my 3ds, a few 3d videos etc. why wait for a hack that will never come?

About 1 1/2 years ago when Psy bought his 3DS even a used one would cost about 75 Euros at GameStop and other stores in the area where I live. And that was without any accessories and of dubious quality (just what expect from GameStop).
Like I said, it is a decision everybody has to make for their own 3DS. The only help we can give people is stating the pros and cons, and there aren't many substantial pros at the moment.
