Runescape 3 is the name for the upcoming version of the Runescape client (the part of an MMO that runs on the player's computer). Just like the current version (called "Runescape 2" during development) was a major technological and visual change from the original version (pesudo-3D using 2D sprites as some of you may remember), Runescape 3 promises to do the same (and will likely just be called "Runescape" like always, with the older versions getting re-named to note that they're the old ones).

Built in HTML5 instead of Java, the beta testing version of the client (which is already open to some members) only runs in Chrome right now, but should run in more browsers as proper HTML5 support spreads. The change in platform and re-write of the engine allows many things that were difficult, impossible, or simply too slow in the old engine. Increased draw distances, skyboxes, weather effects, controller support, and more. Of course moving to HTML5 brings up the possibility of being able to play Runescape on something like a smartphone or a tablet, though this isn't currently a goal for Jagex.

In addition to the info about the Runescape 3 client, information about in-game updates such as a new skill (something that usually only happens once every few years), new graphics, and a customizable UI was released to the press. Of course, if you only watch the video to see British people cosplaying and dressing up a cathedral and castle about a videogame as part of their job, I don't blame you.

Most people (myself included) play Runescape FOR the quests. The quests in this game are quite different from most MMOs because they're actually story-centric and involve problem-solving skills and all that jazz. Hell, Runescape beats out most jRPGs as far as quest involvement. :P

Given, it's an MMO.

3. buy your way to the top!
If you mean the P2P/F2P stuff, subscribers and free players are on separate servers, and while subscribers can go onto free servers, while there they can't use any of the better equipment or skills or anything.

Had access to the early beta for a couple weeks now. It looks pretty* but is almost totally unoptimised at the moment meaning around 12fps at highest settings on my PC.

*Compared to regular Runescape.

I'm kind of impressed by just how long they've managed to stick around at this point. Not even one desperate retool to appeal to the youths of today. Good for them, I guess, but I'm out on a bet - My money was on an eventual change to RuneSkate, a fantasy skateboard themed MMO, and the first of its kind to feature both grinding and shredding.

On another note, I should probably stop basing all of my bets in puns. I have a feeling my "Miami Dauphins" wager isn't going anywhere either.

The draw distance and (hopefully the) ability to move without clicking everywhere would likely get me back into playing. I just can't manage that movement type anymore, man.
This is the view of Catherby from the top of White Wolf Mountain. Notice you can actually make out the Law altar on Entrana across the sea.

Players are now complaining that the extended draw distance really shows how small and crowded the world of Gielinor really is. There's no pleasing some people.

And we're stuck with point and click movement I'm afraid.

No, RS3 will not have WASD-style direct movement.
We tried prototyped it and it wasn't fun to use.

And the less said about the "Boston Red Cocks" the better.

People can cry and bash runescape all they want, but it's the only MMO I've ever seen to still get regular updates that continually expand the world and its content.
The fact that it has stayed wholly F2P is pretty astonishing too. Sure, members do have some stuff easier, and access to a massive world, but the price of subscription is pretty piddly considering what you get from it.

I'd say runescape is a pretty impressive accomplishment, and it's obvious why tons of people still play it (myself not included, but i do keep a sub running so I can hop into members and check stuff out whenever I feel like it).
