Hey,

So the situation is that I just got a 3DS XL with pre-installed Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, so there's no game card. I also got a r4i gold card and I'm not really aware of what these kernal and firmware changes affect so I though about asking here, before I install it, since I found no answers to my questions from Google.

1. If I update my kernel/firmware, does it affect my pre-installed game or can I continue playing it with the saves I have?

2. If I end up ruining some update and I need to reset the whole device, does it also forget my eShop account? I could still get the MH3U game back from there but not the saves.

3. After I have installed/updated the kernel/firmware, can I normally play legit 3DS games (with cards) with the custom firmware installed?

4. Is it possible to change back to the retail kernel/firmware anyhow?

5. Is it possible that 3DS games automatically update my firmware even if I don't have WLAN enabled?

These questions might sure sound stupid but I have no previous experience of r4i cards and found no info about these.

It shouldnt effect your pre installed game and some new game update your 3DS

Thanks for the reply!

So basically, if I boot the device without the r4i card, would it boot to the view I currently have, with the MH3U? And with the r4i card, to the r4i view with possible games on the r4i card?

Does the custom kernel/firmware effect my eShop account anyhow? Can I use it as long as I have the latest firmware version?

I'd still like to hear about my 3rd and 4th questions.

you can play ds games and it doesnt effect eshop unless there is a 3ds update because if there is a 3ds update your not suppose to update your 3ds or your r4i card wont work

3. yes the custom kernel and firmware if for the r4i card

4.no

The r4i is its own separate entity from the 3ds. The 3ds remains unmodded , so you make zero changes to it whatsoever. The firmware is flashed to the r4i (via a ds console) which allows it to run on newer updated 3ds and dsi systems. The kernel is the interface and provides rom compatibility.

So:

1. It doesn't affect your 3ds whatsoever, period.

2. If you ruin a firmware flash with the r4i you will need to re flash it using ANOTHER flashcard. Your games on it and 3ds games and eshop account remain unaffected. If you Fuck up a 3ds update, your r4 games are fine but your system itself will need to be sent to Nintendo. Whether your saves for 3ds downloaded games make it or not is in their hands. They will migrate your eshop account.

3. Yes as the kernel and firmware only affect your r4. No changes are made to the 3ds whatsoever. No you can not play 3ds games off of your r4, you still need official cartridges for them.

4. 3ds firmware is never touched.

5. Newer 3ds carts will have updates on them but will prompt you to install. Apparently the 3ds can auto update now wirelessly but I've yet to see it happen. Make sure you ALWAYS check if your r4 will run on the new 3ds firmware before you update, or else you will not be able to use your r4 without updating it via an older ds or ds lite, or 3ds or dsi on an older firmware. You can find that info on your cart manufacturers website.
