Hacking Backwards Compatible Vs. Non-BC PS3

I've done some research and haven't really come up with much.

My question is just what it states above.
Now with the PS2 Classics so that any CFW PS3 can play PS2 games. What does (If anything) the 60GB
hardware backwards compatible PS3 have over the slim PS3s or the non-BC PS3s. Besides being able to play original disk PS2 games.

I figured that a BC PS3 would have more compatibility then a non-BC PS3, but I cannot find any information or even if there was backup loading
of PS2 games pre dating the PS2 Classics route.

I can either drop $500 for a never opened 60GB BC PS3, or buy a slim PS3 that is on or under 3.50 for far less.

The multiMan which allows playing PS2 Classics is very new, so not sure anyone has compiled any compatibility lists just yet.

The PS2 classics hack is pretty cool but not all of the games work perfect with it, some have bad issues and others do not load at all.

All I'm wondering though is due to having a Backwards Compatible PS3, would PS2 games be more compatible then they are now (I have seen a compatibility list, far from complete but still has allot of game un-playable) If the backwards compatible PS3 doesn't have better compatibility I would rather buy a Slim cause the Fat isn't superior in my opinion.

I'm wondering though, does the compatibility chart for BC PS3s apply to the current method of loading PS2 backups. I know before the PS2 Classics method it was the Cobra dongle that allowed you to play PS2 backups, and I'm assuming the cobra would play all the games on that chart they way they are said to play.

The BC PS3 lists says firmware updates by Sony. So it's safe to assume it's just non hacked PS3 compatibility.

PS2 Classics from what I have gathered, uses the debug-mode software emulator for PS2 software that had been left over in the PS3 firmware for some time, even including existing slims that obviously were never intended to use it. With the Cobra dongle, you could even enable this emulator so that at least a neutered PS3 would try to play the disc games. But even then, they admitted upfront that it was buggy and slow, and likely won't work with many games. Remember how on firmware 1.* the BC for hardware PS3's on high-profile games was kinda crap? Kinda the same reason here.

So using PS2 Classics on a neutered PS3 for games that Sony itself didn't explicitly release is a crap-shoot... whether it will work or not really depends. It might run the games you care about fine, hit-or-miss, or none of the games will work.

It's why I'm still hankering for OpenCOBRA to come out, so that I could play my burned PS2/1 games directly and finally retire my chipped PS2. While I would appreciate the ISO loading capability added in in homebrew recently, I don't have nearly enough storage in my PS3 (and on externals) to appropriately cover that right now If I could get them to load off disc I'd be happy.

So basically what I understand is nothing besides the Cobra dongle can utilize the hardware emulation of PS2 games, so I either have to use all the Cobra firmware and get the cobra dongle or wait for Open Cobra (Which doesn't seem to be coming quickly), so basically the Slim can play PS2 backups just as good as a hardware backwards compatible PS3 without a Cobra dongle and all that hassle.

A full-BC PS3 can play just about any retail PS2 game, in addition to PS2 classics released. And chances are that it would have better luck playing games converted to PS2 Classics as well.

I guess I'm going to go the Cobra route, I know the BC PS3 can play retail, but I'm looking to backup my retail games. Assuming Cobra uses the hardware emulation, hopefully there will be better support with PS2 classics on Hardware BC PS3s in the future.

I definately wouldn't spend that much money on a BC PS3, a used one is another matter. I prefer the look of the slim though.

For PS2 games I'd just get an old slim pstwo and install freemcboot and open ps2 loader and stream the games from your NAS or PC.

All PS3 are backward compatible with PS1 games as they only ever used a software emulator for those. BC/NON BC only affects PS2 games. Playing burned PS1 games on a PS3 was possible ages ago.

Well I have one personal comparison, and that's Grand Theft Auto III. I played through the game start to finish on my 60GB (PAL, the NTSC 60GB was even better with compatibility), and had absolutely no problems. I played and completed GTA3 off PSN last year and although it worked fine for most of the game, there is very noticeable framerate drops and the HUD likes to flicker (which I think is the cause of the framerate issues).

So yeah, 60GB > PS2 Classics compatibility at this point.

And even then, only if it's a Japanese or American CECH(A/B). Europe never got a full-BC SKU of the PS3.

But that being said, my fave feature of the Cobra USB is simply that it'll let me play my disc backups for PS1 and PS2 games, which is about all I'd need to effectively retire my PS2. I keep hoping that OpenCOBRA would at least come out in whatever state it is. I might have cared about it playing PSP Backups before, but I have a PSP Go now, so it just isn't as high a priority now.

europe did get a full-BC ps3, my friend buy a launch ps3 and it was full-BC

No, it did not. Their 60gig was based on the soft-BC 80gig that we have here in the states.

Officially, there is no full hardware BC model of PS3 that was released to the European region.

I'll say what I always say - playing retro games is always infinitely better on their native console, in this case the PS2. Used PS2's are dirt-cheap and you'll get perfect compatibility, plus the Slim models barely take up any space.

As far as Sony's latest PS2 Classics range, all PS3's have the same compatibility, so no worries there. Things were different with the early PS3's which contained some of the PS2's hardware, but this functionality has been cut in favour of PS2 Classics which do not take advantage of the now-latent hardware as far as I know.
