You're pretty dumb to be honest, if you decided it was a good idea "HEY! I'll put my electronic in some alcohol!"

Best advice: quit while you're ahead. Give up on gaming.

I love it how people act like assholes when someone made a mistake... sarcasm by the way...

Am I the only one baffled by the "dipping in alcohol" thing in the first place?? Why on earth would you do that for???? It's the old "if I tell you to jump over the bridge, will you do it?" kinda thing. And what's this nonsense about boiling alcohol???? And , and, and...

baffled.

...

it's almost frightening.

I guess he understand now that almost everyone criticized him.
Can't you just not post anything if you have nothing helpful to say instead of insulting members?

There's not a lot you can do now. Alcohol is melting plastics and like PsyBlade said I'm pretty sure you can't save it anymore.
Maybe the advice was good at some point. It depends what was the problem, what the person helping you understood and what he thought will help you. I guess it was to cleans the charcoal/connectors between the button's and the main board? You should open it to do that with a ear stick, and I doubt it was your problem, unless you put your console in dirty places.
but now you can't do anything about your console's state.

I'm not sure you can send it back to be replaced, you should buy a new one, or at least just a new screen if it's the only thing bothering you now.
Did at least it fixed your shoulder button problem?

congratulations fellow tempers i finally had a reason to use it.

seriously ain't you all had enough bagging on the guy. EVERYONE makes stupid mistakes EVERYONE. so all these ass holeish comments don't help none

now to the topic on hand i agree with those FEW who helped put it in light with heat(aka a desk lamp, sun) if it dont work if its in warranty see if nintendo will repair it for free(doubt it)

Alcohol is a must for cleaning electronics if you know what you are doing. OP was just being a moron when he dipped his 3DS in it. If you want to use alcohol to clean electronics you need to do it properly. First you use q tips and just gently clean the areas that are dirty or for bigger jobs coffee filters work really well (like if you are cleaning off a CPU to reseat your heatsink). You should never just submerge something in any type of liquid though. OP got off lucky that his DS still works and any flaws to the screen now are a consequence of his/her stupidity.

Call Nintendo and see if they will repair though understand damage caused my liquids are almost never covered by warranty so you will have to pay to get it fixed. Tell your parents because even if they get mad they are still your parents and they can help you and I assume they will have to pay the repair bill anyway. Never attempt to self repair something without understanding it and only attempt to self repair something you can afford breaking. If you can't afford any damage you might cause then use the warranty that's what it's there for.

Dipping no, spraying maybe. However, if you have a dodgy shoulder button use compressed air, more than likely there's crap stuck in between

It WAS advice to fix the shoulder buttons, and the blowing trick only works temporarily)

when you blow on the shoulder button and/or use a can of compressed air, it is a permanent fix, until more dust gets onto the micro switch. the problem most gamers have is that they are unable to significantly blow the microscopic dust particles off the micro switch. as a result the buttons usually continue to malfunction or the pressure point shifts. to clean it out without opening the unit up you need to pull the buttons away from the shell so that you can get a proper amount of air under there. i fixed a few ds units this way and each of them required patience and a lot of compressed air. once you get that right burst of air the shoulder button will go back to normal functionality. after that i recommend that you keep it away from dust when not playing, as in, store it in a case and keep it in there when you travel.

if you ever get liquid on electronics in the future remember to let it fully dry before you turn it back on. rice was a good idea, it will absorb liquids. leaving it in direct sunlight might not be the best idea, the sun is harsh and could fade the paint or yellow the cover of the lcd screen. i would recommend leaving it where sun enters the room from 11am-5pm, and keep it there for awhile. so it gets warmth and light but isn't in the direct path of the sun. a lamp is also a good idea but keep it about 2 feet away from the unit. you don't want the unit to get too hot too quickly, you could heat of the solder and cause some other issues.

if you do send it to nintendo, play dumb. i'm pretty sure they won't cover dipping it in alcohol under the warranty plan.

and the battery will not like the direct sunlight for long period of time.
If you do it, remove the battery. I got a dead ipod battery like that.

Probably someone told him to clean the buttons with rubbing alcohol, meaning using a cotton swab or other way to use a very small amount, and he somehow turned it into dunk the whole thing in a big pot of alcohol in his mind.

That seems like the most probable thing.

There is a german saying.

Dict.cc's translation for it is: "The laugh is always on the loser."

My (albeit lacking) english would translate it to:

"He who has the damage hasn't got to ask other people to laugh at him" (they will do it either way).

So cut him some slack.

Trust me you wouldn't want that happen to yourself either. And I'm not being overly serious here...
(Don't take this as an offense)

I never understood what people gain from laughing at others expense.
Weird.

Define dip and alcohol. Not sure why the other members jumped you when this is a valid method of cleaning contacts, you just need to know how to do it. Cleaning contacts with a q-tip dipped in high-volume spirit with no additives (scent, flavour, sugar etc. - you need pure spirit, not perfume or liquor) is a good idea - putting the whole console in a glass of beer is not. For future reference, this technique actually involves taking the console apart if the contacts are not exposed, so it's not something for you. Your system needs new screens due to damage by moisture exposure - those can be replaced. To get rid of the rest of excess moisture, put it on a bed of rice in a sealed box, then set it aside for a day or two in a warm place in your house. Cover the rice with a tissue first to prevent dust from entering the system. Rice is very moisture-absorbant, it will absorb the excess moisture and vapor from the air until the console is completely dry.
