Right now, some of them are just annoying. They all are really one program, most famously found on 3dsemulator.org and Hacking nation.
They all have an initial free download but later require a BIOS.dll, Audio.dll and several more

A friend of mine recently searched for a 3DS emulator to play a dump of 'eir Super Mario 3D Land cartridge and found 3dsemulator.org, then asked me about it once the BIOS download turned out to be a survey (I think it was a survey anyway). I told 'em that the 3DS BIOS was still unknown and no one had re-created it yet, and linked to http://3dbrew.org/wiki/Fundraiser .

Perhaps this thread could become an educational resource if the thread name were changed, and the thread were stickied? Something like "List of 3DS Emulators" with the opening post saying "THEY'RE ALL FAKE" and listing the 3dsemulator.org one and any new ones that pop up.

Ed: There's already a sticky saying READ ME FIRST | NOTHING PLAYS 3DS ROMS. This is kind of redundant then. But we can't reply to that thread because it's a locked sticky.
