Slim consoles does require soldering? but their easy to install none the less.

People from the USA are going to have to wait before domestic resellers are stocked.

Now this is interesting. Previously, to install a different BD drive, you needed a means to run homebrew to "marry" the drive to the system. I'm kind of curious of how you install and set up this ODDE.

No more need to keep my PS3 games next to my TV/PS3? I'm interested. Once the next gen comes along and PS3 PSN will undoubtably be getting worse (just like every old console/PC game in the past), I'll hit this into a PS3. If it works without CFW to begin with.

I think you need to be on 3.55 to get the drive key and then you can safely update to the latest ofw

Pretty much yes, but as long as there is no confirmation on how to get drive keys from OFW PS3s, there is no way of knowing how the feature is done.
