If you're only referring to Picross DS, then I highly recommend Picross 3D (it's for the DS, not the 3DS). If you're only referring to Picross 3D, then I recommend Picross DS.

I only have the first PICROSS, I'm not sure I can wrap my head around the 3D version. It looks difficult, I'm not sure my brain thinks in 3D! While I know that version works on the DS, the others are for 3DS, which I don't own. I've never seen a PICROSS for the 3DS.

Picross 3D (for the DS) is exponentially more fun than the original Picross DS, in my opinion. It starts off very easy and is very intuitive. I highly recommend you give it a try.

Homebrew version I have been enjoying for the last few days
http://gbatemp.net/threads/nds-picross-20121107-from-meraman.341961/

Color cross is worth a go.

http://gbatemp.net/threads/ds-0811-essential-sudoku-ds-europe.42285/ should have a few.

Japanese games tend to Romanise Picross as "illust" or "Oekaki" so pick pretty much any there. There are a few of them too if you do head down that path and it is not like they require much in the way of Japanese knowledge to play.

I had not heard of it before 5 minutes ago but Iraroji VOW http://gbatemp.net/threads/ds-1299-iraoji-vow-japan.57377/

I can not say I got on that well with the 3d versions as they were implemented on the DS but I could get there with a system that does 3d far better.

Edit- forgot about pic pic

Most of them are only in japanese, but it's not a problem (just need to understand/remember the menus).
I'll list some of them.

Oekaki Puzzle Battle Vol.1 - Yuusha-Oh GaoGaiGar Version easy, and nice game. multiple little picross to make a bigger one. Stylus only.
Simple DS Series Vol. 7 - The Illust Puzzle & Suuji Puzzle (exists in english) Oekaki in Color ! It's a different strategy than the normal one. 1000 picross. Not the best picross game in gameplay/hint. There's also Sudoku with it
Puzzle series Vol. 6 Illust Logic Good one, very good hints and controls. Stylus and Dpad
DS Puzzler - NumPlay Fan & Oekaki Logic Vertical DS holding. Stylus only, Undo function, colors. I didn't play this one, but don't like it. There's a Sudoku too.
Picross DS (the one you have)
Iraroji VOW Looks nice. Stylus and Dpad, undo function, colors. no "row/column" guide when using stylus (you can go to the cases near other one, but you can undo)
Illust Logic DS + Colorfull Logic Very good one. Good hints, unicolor, multi colors. (I recommend this one)
Simple DS Series Vol. 28 - The Illust Puzzle & Suuji Puzzle 2 same as other "simple DS series"
DS Puzzler - Nanpure Fan & Oekaki Logic - Wi-Fi Taiou Same as NumPlay Fan. (I don't like it)
Color cross Another one in english! a little different than the usual pricross games.
Puzzle Mate DS - Oekaki Mate
Challenge me - Brain Puzzle 1 & 2 : This is the english version of the "Nanpure" series. (the one holding the DS vertically)
Picross 3D You should try it! The 3D is not very hard, and the difficulty is progressive.

There are also homebrew!
NDS-Picross by MeRaMan. I find the hints a little hard to read, and the hints color a little hard to differentiate.
Edit: Ah, this homebrew has been recommended by everyone above

I can get Picross 3D quite cheap actually, so I'll give it a try. I've looked into those other ones (imports) and they are very costly to find, they seem to range from $35 - $100 in price. I did look into Color Cross, but it didn't have very good reviews. Pic Pic, also, very expensive and hard to find. I'll start looking into the English avail. ones first and then see if I can't save up to buy some of the Japanese ones, unless somewhere here knows where I can obtain them cheaper. I'm not familiar with "homebrew", can you give me a link where I can read about it? Thank you so much! Everyone has been very helpful.

Homebrew are games made by non official/unlicensed developers.
They are free and legal to download.
You can play them with an emulator, or directly on your console with a flashcard.

Before importing from Japan, check the english games. I listed the japanese one as this is the first one I found, but they seem they have been released in english at a later time.
I guess the "Simple DS Series" (Essential Sudoku DS, in english) shouldn't be too expansive, but is not the best one :(

The two "Illust Logic" are good one. The first is in unicolor only, the second one has both uni/multicolors. but they are only available from import.

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
