I hear viruses like storm worm, code red and those damn rootkit viruses are all pretty bad lol worst i've ever gotten was anti-virus 2009 whats the worst virus you ever got? Discuss here.

Got a Ramnit once. Damn that screwed my computer over so bad. Had to reinstall (which is my last resort as I hate doing reformats unlike many people I know). Until today I still do not know how the heck I got it. The only people who are safer than me are those who have no internet connection....... :\

They'd have to be ZeroAccess (sort of, this strange thing happened where the malwares payload happened after most of its files were deleted. Had to remove an OEM appication after the damage. Could still be on my computer now but, doesn't seem to be causing any harm...)

Worst virus?

I think conficker is quite annoying... spread through usb/local network/internet (only affect Win2K/XP), or any virus that spread through USB.

Or I remember lovesan, you go on the internet and you get a one minute countdown then your computer restart (workaround, change the date of your computer).

F**** i hate trojans!!!!!! i had one on my old computer (still on there too i'll bet) hiding in a shareware software i had downloaded and installed. tryed to register it and bam! a small weird window popped up with words in a different language and one green check icon and one red X icon with other words in english next to the icons saying yes, no. the next thing i knew my antivirus kept removing the trojan which installed from there and hiding in my C:\ temporary folder lol that same window then kept coming back installing the same trojan after i rebooted everytime. i got a new pc after that.

Specially if you have a stupid brother that visits all those porn/scam sites on a daily basis

my worst was some Japanese anti-piracy virus it overwrote the first so many KB/MB on all my non-system files so it booted but all the files were all .jpeg/.png images of a red piracy fighting octopus XD i give up and did a reinstall

One that changed my search engine on all my browsers (and homepage too) to u-search.net.... Pretty annoying, slugged down my browser too in general.

Hard to remove, SUPER took care of it after 2 hours and a reboot though.

My windows 98 machine got one when I pirated a copy of Quake 2, Hidrag.A, I still remember... because back then there was no cure for files that had been infected (and it infected other .EXE files, it was an actual virus, not this "oh this program displays an ad so I'm calling it a virus" BS you get today), so I ended up having to do a factory restore. Thankfully I only lost all the programs and could redownload them, my personal backup stuff was safe.

Nowadays the first line of defense is keeping your software updated. Simply liming yourself to browsing "safe" sites isn't enough, sites are often hacked to inset malware into them, and any site thaat displays third-party ads can try to serve you an infection. If you keep your browser, OS, and other internet-facing software up-to-date (including browser media plugins), that'll nip off the majority of potential issues.

Oh aye, but thanks to some (only way I can do it) idiot proofing that microsoft do with windows updates and browsers that has at least become easier for everyone.

as for everyone calling everything a virus, aye... the word Virus has been watered down and people seem to mix Malware, Trojans and keyloggers to true viruses.

I remember the days a virus would actually try to do some real damage rather than just put some ads on your screen

On one of my old computers I remember getting a virus that just kept opening different porn sites on Firefox.

Like I don't know how I got it, I didn't download anything suspicious or go anywhere suspicious (certainly not any porn sites), it just happened.

Worst thing was that it was on the family computer and my whole family was home. So basically I had to go between working on getting rid of if and shutting off my monitor so they wouldn't think I was browsing porn.

Fun times, fun times... although I haven't really gotten a virus since then and that was years ago.
