I recently got my first phone which supports Android and I decided to check out a few emulators on the Play Store but I noticed most emulators for any console were 4.99 in price. I did notice that a few emulators were free but I don't know if they're worth trusting or not.

Can anyone throw a few good free emulators at me so I can fulfil my emulating needs?

I recommend the "oid" emulators. There's nesoid, snesoid, gbcoid, gbaoid and n64oid. All are free except N64oid. I have them on my Thrive and they work great. I need to find a good android compatible controller though, hehe.

Definitely try Snes9x EX. Mepen64 Plus AE is the best you can do for free N64 emulation as of yet and a port of RetroArch is incoming though I'm not sure if it'll have a premium price tag on it.

Don't pay for emulators. Most of the time they are just morons quickly porting existing PC emulators and in for a quick buck. Mupen64 Plus AE is open source, so it suffers this a lot. Also, if your device is running ICS or Jellybean, the 'oid' emulators might just run with a black screen for you.

1. Mupen64 Plus AE -http://www.paulscode.com/forum/index.php?topic=723.0 <-- Those are buggy test builds, you should grab the latest snapshot, and if you experience issues, then grab the last stable build.

2. SNES9X EX - http://www.explusalpha.com/home/snes9x-ex/downloads

3. FPse - It's a great PSX emulator, haven't tried the newer ePSXe port - https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5lbXVsYXRvci5mcHNlIl0

As for GBA and other emulators, you can always try the 'oid' emulators mentioned above.

Here are a few to mess around with, but don't expect great performance. These are more for bragging rights, atm.

nds4droid- https://play.google.com/store/apps/...DEsImNvbS5vcGVuZG9vcnN0dWRpb3MuZHM0ZHJvaWQiXQ..

PPSSP - https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsIm9yZy5wcHNzcHAucHBzc3BwIl0.

ColEm is a good Colecovision emulator as well. As for controllers, check out the Wiimote Controller app; it supports nunchuck and Classic Controllers as well. Mario Kart 64 on Mupen64 Plus, AE with a Classic Controller is a Godsend.

Just google and download aptoid.apk to your phone. It doesn't require a rooted phone and it will let you download and install any app for free. I got 20-30 apps from the $15 Final Fantasy to the $3.99 GTA games. Aptoid works very much like the google play store, its simple just search for whatever then pick the version you want or just choose latest version. If you root your phone it will allow you to replace and update built in android apps.

So are these apps you can download free or do I need to purchase them like the google play store? If I need to purchase them are they cheaper than the store?

No aptoid is not an app that you cannot find on the play store, just google it download it to your pc transfer aptoid.apk to your phone/tablet's sd card. Go to settings on your android device and turn on "unknown sources" then find and install the aptoid.apk and then run it on your phone/tablet. Then just search for whatever app you want and download it, no paying what so ever.
