So it seems that the 3k3y guys have released some more info on their website.
Along with the info they have released a video of it in action.

HOW IT WORKS

3k3y is an optical disk drive emulator for the Playstation 3 video game console.

It is installed between the genuine Bluray drive and the PS3 motherboard.

Once 3k3y is successfully installed and configured it can be used to make backups of your original PS3 game disks to USB media, and play those backups from USB media without the need of the original game disk.

Several games can be backed up to a single USB media, making it ideal as a 'jukebox' for hardcore gamers as well as for families with children too young to handle bluray discs with appropriate care.

3k3y works with most PS3 models, however there are a few exceptions, most notably the new super slim model and all PS3s which comes with firmware 4.xx (after retrieving the drive key the PS3 can be upgraded to any firmware). We are working to add support for these PS3's but you are adviced to consult with your reseller if you are in doubt whether your PS3 is compatible with 3k3y or not.

* Currently firmware 3.55 is required for exctracting the drive key. Once the key has been extracted the PS3 can be updated to any official or custom firmware. We are working on hardware methods for extracting keys from PS3's already on 4.x firmware.

Since this is the same team that made the x360key, I'd say it's just a bonus feature. As the x360key on Xbox 360 in addition to allowing you to back up games, plays ISOs downloaded from the internet.

going by the assumpion of this being a bluray emulator, the only way ps2 games would be playable is with a ps3 that is ps2 compatible.

the cobra usb dongle you mean? not that I have one but I have heard some horror stories about how the compatibility/function of it is meant to be dreadful

Always going to be able to play downloaded games with these commercial devices. As much as they claim it's for backups, you only have to look around the right forums, to see what most are using them for. Most they ever do is come blank or have something on them that can't be used for piracy and then mysteriously an "unofficial" update appears to enable it.


PS2 emulator was enabled for all with the Cobra and I think it was enabled with something else for custom firmware without the dongle, but it's crap without the hardware support.

Nope, it involved changing some system files.

I wonder if this will still work with a Blu-ray Drive that can't read discs anymore? I mean emulate the disc drive to play backup games of course.

Well if you're already on 4.xx, it's kinda hard to go and change the firmware to extract the keys without additional hardware. Hopefully extracting the keys is made possible for the newer firmwares :3

So their claim that this works without custom firmware is a load of bollocks?? fair enough, it may be functional on OFW versions *after* the drive key is dumped, but doesn't this still mean that CFW is required to make this device functional on any real level? Have they mentioned anywhere about how long this will take to be usable on 100% virgin ps3's?

There is no such CFW.

There are no LV2 exploits for >4.20: http://www.ps3hax.ne...e-from-kdsbest/

ATM there aren't even any exploits for 3.56-4.20 in order to launch Naehrwert's or KDSbest's LV2 code FW upto 4.20.

Exploits are hampered by the HV.

Until an exploit (A) can be found, and (B) can get past the HV, no new CFW is happening, and no keys will be extractable for this.

I am a only a casual spectator of PS3 stuff but I remember watching the presentation from the guys who hacked it and they even got the private keys. This was meant to it, the PS3 blown completely open forever, no way to fix it.
