Hardware 3DS VS PSP 3000? (Graphics)

Hey guys... I want to know whether the PSP 3000 or the Nintendo 3DS is better in GRAPHICS. It would be nice if you could link me to a rather official site (nintendo.com, sony.com/psp). Thanks.

...the 3DS is better than the PSP as far as graphics are concerned - the two systems are a generation apart.

To be more precise, the 3DS has a far stronger CPU (An ARM11-based dual core working at the frequency of 268Mhz compared to the 1-333Mhz scalable MIPS) and GPU (the PICA200 working at 400Mhz with 6MB on-board VRAM of the 3DS compared to the 166Mhz Sony's custom chip with 2MB on-board VRAM) and it works at a higher resolution (the PSP's resolution is 480x272, the 3DS's is 800×240 pixels, 400×240 per-eye in 3D mode). To top it all off, the PSP has 32-64MB RAM depending on the model, wheras the 3DS has 128MB, plus it's in a faster standard.

All in all, the 3DS beats the PSP in every aspect, plus it has glass-less 3D, so if you're in for the graphics, you'd want a 3DS. That said, there's an even beefier console out there - the Vita. Have you considered that?

I won't really link you to any site other than Wikipedia - articles on both consoles, their specs as well as articles about the GPU's and CPU's are freely available.

As an additional resource, I'll post a graphics capabilities chart that compares the DS, the 3DS and the PSP - courtesy of IGN.com.

As you can see, the 3DS beats the PSP in every way imaginable apart from the Vertex Performance which couldn't be properly measured at the time of creating the article.

That's not a very accurate comparison - the two games work on different engines. Monster Hunter Tri G works on the MT Framework Mobile engine, wheras Monster Hunter Portable 3rd is based on the original, old Monster Hunter engine. The two may look similar, but they're very different from each other.

If you truly want to compare the two systems, you should look for gameplays of games that the two platforms share, for example BlazBlue: Continuum Shift or Unchained Blades. Admittedly those games are not exactly heavy on graphics, but at the very least they're the same game.

Do keep in mind that the PSP is using 8-year-old handheld technology at the least... so it's not surprising the 3DS beats it.

Seems a little weird comparing a current gen console to the previous gen console. The PSP is a whole lot older than the 3DS and somehow its meant to be able to have better graphics. If you ask about games then maybe there would be a better discussion.

Well I guess the OP knows who the winner would be if the 3DS is compared to the Vita so I guess he decided to try to find another way to bash Sony. Not a Sony fanboy but it seems stupid to compare a current gen console to one 8 years old.

I did read the thread. There you go, making wild assumptions again. You made a very outrageous accusation about the OP with no proof or reasoning whatsoever. And then you got on my case for accusing you of something similar, when I had way more reason to think that (wild, butthurt accusation about attacking Sony that makes no sense), regardless of whether that's true or not. And sheesh, you get SO sensitive about being accused of being a fandrone anti-fan. If you can't handle being called that, then don't accuse other people of that when there's literally no reason to think that!

It's a legitimate question because the hardware specs are confusingly close if you look at numbers alone and don't really understand how graphics work.

3DS: 400x240 pixels visible resolution, 268MHz CPU, 268MHz GPU, 128MB RAM.
PSP 3000: 480x272 pixels, 333MHz CPU, 166MHz spooky unknown purpose secondary processor, 64MB RAM.

Not that far apart. Someone with no technical knowledge could get confused.

And you can't deny Nintendo has been using severely outdated tech in their last few consoles, so the question whether their latest gen handheld is better graphics-wise than Sony's last gen is a valid, if a bit cynical, one.

My assumption comes from your response which clearly shows you decided to misquote and ignore what was written and automatically respond in the most stupid manner possible by claiming I was a Sony fanboy which has no basis to begin with so meaning you must have assumed that. I accuse people with a more valid reason than when you accused me, you made that accusation with even less basis than I do. Normally a company X product VS company Y product thread is created in order to bash one product and/or company so I have more of a basis to assume this is another which company makes a better product to start flame war thread while your accusation was based on what? hm? Finally someone who actually makes sense and isn't spewing more bullshit.

This has been compared last year when the 3DS was released and even if you compare actual gameplay images not those fancy retouched screenshots the 3DS's graphics are less pixelated even without 3D than the PSP and I don't know if you can in game screenshot with the 3DS but even the most recent PSP games it does have a little bit of pixelation.

Numbers won't tell you what the GPU is capable of in terms of features.
The 3DS supports things like modern shaders (see RE:Revelations), particle effects, 2x horizontal or 4x Anti-aliasing and stuff like bump-mapping etc.
So that's yet another point to add to what's already been mentioned here.

Plus the 3DS no longer has the second CPU locked to things like the web browser, and with more devs figuring out the device you should expect second gen 3DS games to look better than some of the better looking games currently out on the system.

While the Vita is a monster the 3DS is still a huuge step up from the PSP.
