Well, he's ONLY the biggest name in gaming. Nothing special. :P

Not in the last 15 years.
I'm sorry. I just had to laugh at your comment.
Ask anyone what they think of the name Mario, and 99% of them will think of the iconic plumber. The 1% are those living under a rock.

Seriously sometimes, it feels that people won't even think on what they're commenting just because they need to hate on something everybody loves. It's hilarious really and stupid.

For the first half of those fifteen years, Playstation did a lot as a brand. Sure, Mario has a lot of name recognition, but Sony can be credited to making gaming a mass market. I mean their first console sold over 100 million. It broke records. A few years later, the PS2 broke those records and still holds them. Then comes Valve, who almost singlehandedly transformed the PC gaming market and popularized digital distribution. And as much as many people don't like to admit it, Apple has done A LOT to shape modern gaming in recent years.

So yeah, that's my reasoning. It's not just brand recognition, it's what they've done. Everyone knows who Mario is but more people know what Apple is.

EDIT: But I feel like I unintentionally derailed this topic. Moving on.

Mario is winning?

The biased towards Nintendo on this forum sometimes makes me want to vomit.
How the fuck does that mean the forum is Nintendo-biased. You haven't considered that some people, I don't know, just prefer Mario games to the Rayman ones?

None of that has anything to do with being the "biggest name" in gaming. I was talking about how well known he is. And since I mentioned a character, not a company (I said Mario, not Nintendo), there's no way I can imagine that you would mixed up my meaning.

Crediting Sony for making videogames a mass-market is a lofty claim that I disagree with. If anything, I would credit Nintendo for broadening the appeal of videogames with the DS + Wii (although they couldn't keep sales in 2009-onwards up for the latter due to the game drought). The Game Boy and Game Boy Color both sold quite a bit ($118+ million) years before the PS2 entered in the market.

And Valve isn't nearly as influential as you seem to think they are. While they did do a lot for PC gaming and digital distribution, the PC market wasn't exactly dead before.

But here's what I don't get, why are you bringing up companies like Valve and Sony in comparison to a video-game franchise like Mario? If you're talking about video-game franchises, it would be very hard to argue that Mario is not the biggest name in gaming or at least one of them. National surveys have found Mario to be more recognizable to children than Mickey Mouse and his games consistently sell in the millions (Mario Kart Wii sold 32.44 million!).

Where did I say anything about popularity? But guess what, not everyone shares your opinion. I for one prefer New Super Mario Bros. Wii to Rayman Origins (although I think it's still a great game).

I loved them both on the Wii, and from the looks of things to come the sequels looks to be even better.

If I was forced to choose one or the other I would go with NSMB simply because it just feels right, Rayman Origins played really well and I enjoyed the heck out of it but there where times I didn't feel like I was in total control of the game for some reason. Feel is probably one of the hardest qualities in a platformer to quantify.

And apple is an Iconic name in gaming how? What's this about comparing Valve and Apple to a video game franchise? . Mario is one of the first gaming characters AND most iconic gaming name in history. Not only that, it is the most successful video game franchise ever. (I count all the mario games, dude, not just the platformers.) I won't say anything more because what I wanted to say has been said by Soulx.

Building an entire device around digital downloading and pioneering many of the things we take for granted in modern technology? Love it or hate it, Apple has done a lot to make modern gaming where it is.

He seems to be butthurt because it is a shock to find that Mario games are still as popular as ever. Ignore him.

And how is this revelant to compare this to a video game franchise? You can't compare a company to an iconic character. We're talking about games, not the companies that make them. And trust me, Apple may have influenced gaming indirectly, but it is certainly NOT a gaming company.

Since when did we narrow down the original statement to franchises and characters? There's a lot of names in gaming. Names meaning characters, developers, publishers. I'm talking about the people who changed it.

Irregardless Apple is more recognizable than Mario. I think it's actually the most recognizable brand in the world currently.

I like the fact that he had to put a whole company at Mario alone. Without Nintendo in general, some game companies like Sony
wouldn't even been here in gaming and they still are trying to keep games/game companies afloat even today.

Tbh, I haven't played the first Rayman (Origins), but from what I seen from trailers of both these games,
they both look awesome to play. Personally, I'm finding it hard of putting one against the other.

For god sake, I said Iconic name IN GAMING! Heck even Microsoft is even more recognizable than Mario because Microsoft doesn't only cover gaming.
Apple is more recognizable because of the Imac, Ipod Iphones, entertainement and other things, but I would definetely NOT say this for gaming.
Apple publishes what for gaming, I don't recall Apple having any gaming franchises owned from them. Sure games are published in the App store, but let's be honest, it's not gaming first.

I also recall during the topic that we only mentioned gaming franchises, not companies in any way. Look Xwatchmanx's quote for that.

You know Mario's a big star when someone has to use an entire damn company to disprove this.

No, wait, scratch that, what Guild's saying is just idiotic. He seems to be lost in some strange alternate reality where Apple is a gaming franchise.

Apple sells a shitload of games. It is a gigantic franchise and is involved in gaming.

I think someone should teach Guild what a videogame franchise is since he clearly doesn't understand.

Apple is a company.

Mario, is a franchise.

Microsoft is a company.

The Xbox is a franchise.

And either way, you're dead wrong since Nintendo is a bigger video game company (or "franchise") than Apple can ever be.

And no, not everyone who owns a iPad gives a crap about gaming.

I think we're all having a big misunderstanding here.

"Biggest name" is rather broad. It never said it was a franchise, a company, a character, whatever. When they said "biggest name" I thought of the biggest contributor (company, franchise, character, etc) in the industry, and I chose those three. No one informed me that it was a specific franchise. Or perhaps we just changed the rules of the game so it is a franchise and I'm "wrong".

But as I said I unintentionally derailed the thread and I feel bad.

The biggest name in gaming is Mario, enough said. He is THE video game franchise. Best selling, more recognizable, he's been in almost every format of media, yeah.
