Given the latest happenings on the WiiU scene, it is only appropriate that us,
educated people, well-versed in the wonders of technology, discuss what is so
incredibly wrong about it. Let's have a look, shall we?*

Hardware

All appears to be fine and dandy with the WiiU's hardware on first glance - it features a fast CPU, a strong GPU, lots of RAM both for the system and for the games, not to mention that it uses a high-capacity optical drive which will serve it well as far as games are concerned. It's backwards-compatible with Wii accessories, it supports local co-op... But... is it really all that great, or are we looking at it wearing pink glasses?

Let's start with Nintendo's bad habit of using a contemporary optical drive and stripping it of its essential features. The Wii featured what seemed to be an ordinary DVD drive... but it didn't have a built-in DVD Player. Why? Because Nintendo doesn't like to play royalties.

The WiiU does the exact same thing with BluRay - technically the WiiU's optical disc is the same thing, practically it won't support BluRay playback, nor DVD playback. This means that what could've replaced all your previous hardware (provided you have a player) will only be an addition to it. An average XBox 360 or PS3 user *could* hide their console in the basement after getting the glorious WiiU, but he or she won't - simply because they Do what NintenDon't. Shame.

Another hardware gripe concerns the storage capacity. It's a well-known fact that in the age of Digital Distribution, consoles require a whole lot of it. Nintendo went the other path and chose to use SSD drives - the latest in Hard Drive technology. They're incredibly fast, incredibly reliable, incredibly expensive and incredibly small. 8GB small for the Standard bundle and 32GB small for the Premium bundle. It's great that the write speeds are so fast - an average WiiU user will be able to run out of storage space at lightning speed! It's a good thing that the console will support external drives for storage though - most of us will be able to transplant the ones we used with our Wii's. Not for piracy, of course.

Games Library

The WiiU was hailed to be Nintendo's return to the Core Gamer market. It was built around the ideas of affordability, but not at the cost of quality. Its specs are more than enough to support typical "Core" titles - unlike the specs of their previous consoles, the Wii and the DS/DSi, which had certain hardware-related issues, preventing most "Core" titles from making an appereance. It was promised that it will bring something new to the plate - something that cannot be experienced on its current competitors - the PS3 and the XBox 360. It was supposed to blow them out of the water with one, clean swipe... Will it? Let's have a look at the current Line-Up:
