Psygnosis: 1984 - 2012

Sony has just confirmed that it is closing Liverpool Studio, cancelling all current and future studio projects as well. The studio produced the popular Wipeout games, among many, many others (ever hear of a little game called Lemmings?).

The developer was founded in 1984 as Psygnosis, and was acquired by Sony only nine years later.

It appears that Sony is looking into relocating the studio's staff, so (at the very least) this closure shouldn't be a total Wipeout.

It's been a long time since I could ever consider them to be the Psygnosis they once were, most of the main people left and all they have done for the last 10 years or so was racing games. Even before Sony bought them, most of their best titles they were famous for weren't actually developed by them.

I'm not surprised by the closure, it's a shame for the people who worked there but if the Wipeout games aren't selling and that's all these people do...why else keep it open?

My old university lecturer worked at Psygnosis at one point, and on one of the Playstation Wipeout games.

...Hmm. I definitely don't like to see this studio going under, I really like Psygnosis.

This does not please me.

Heard about it earlier and my first thought was actually what was to become of the "AR museum" mode that was teased in Wipeout 2048 advertising. It's not present in the game as yet, so I was hopeful of a later update for it.

I really liked Psygnosis. Well, not that much anymore since the Amiga days, but that doesn't matter.

One does not simply shut down Psygnosis. I mean, they had awesome franchises under them like LEMMINGS.

I haet you, Sony.

i remember the amiga game they made where u escape from the hospital and go to the graveyard and run from ghosts etc. dreadful floppy disk changes though.
Are you talking about Benefactor? I can't remember anything about a hospital in that game, but the rest of the description rings a bell.

Nice, never heard of that game! Do you remember the name? I'd like trying it.

But it's not made from Psygnosis

EDIT: And it's also one of the worst games ever! At least I didn't put this on my real Amiga

I'll remember you guys, I hope you get relocated to a different studio rather than fired. Your games were amazing!

Oh gawd.... just got nostalgia slapped in the face

I actually know a guy who used to work there. LOL

Last game he made there was an F1 racing game(he did the physcs part).

Thought the studio closed down a year ago when most of them left.
