The hackable 99 dollar quad core android console, totally opensource meant for home brew and warranty even covers you if you change roms and it comes pre rooted.

Heres the kickstarter: http://www.kickstart...eo-game-console

All games featured on it are free, yes you can download paid games through other sources but the ones featured are all free.
Will be able to install pretty much every apk, controller is durable and heavy duty. This is even making news on IGN.
Heres a link to thier Article:http://www.ign.com/a...ackable-console

I think this is just what we need. Android is an amazing OS and this is just one way to show it.

EDIT: WOW i was going to back the kickstarter for 100 dollars this morning, i waited 2 hours and its sold out They've added more ,oand already made half their Goal of 950,000$

You're about 5 days behind.

http://gbatemp.net/t...le-android-cube

But it's cool nonetheless. I might get one.
I saw the news but decided to post this here as well since i have the kickstarter and the ign article.
Meh, whatever.

I'm looking forward to this, would be quite the little device depending on the hardware it comes with. It'd need to be pretty powerful to maintain a nice lifespan. If they can make it last for 3-5 years without any hardware revisions or anything I'd be surprised.

I was gonna edit my post, buuut.

After checking out the Kickstarter page, I actually have a little more faith in it. I like the concept, but making it easy to hack is such a terrible idea. I really don't see how that could be seen as a positive thing, making it easy to pirate games. But I suppose cheaper development costs would possibly make up for it.

There's a lot of pros and cons, I guess we'd have to wait and see how shit pans out. But hell, I just pretty much bought myself the damn thing and 2 controllers.
They have my (very skeptical) support.

If nothing else, it looks like a pretty sexy paperweight.

Apparently you don't know much about Android. You don't even need to hack it to get free apps. It's just drag, drop, install. So um...point is moot I suppose.

Even if they didn't offer easy hacks, someone would root it and install custom ROMs to it eventually. The makers of it probably only profit from the console sales anyways.

Well I know that, but it's still the same thing I said in all technicalities (I was thinking more "console" and less "android" when I posted).
It's easy to pirate games. Too easy.
Not that I care. Not having to buy any games for the console right out of the box is a sweet deal, but my attitude is exactly why it's a problem.

It wants only free to play games which are supported through in app purchases which ouya makes a 30% cut, aka you but a 5$ package of in game credit for whatever and ouya just made, 1.50$. They don't mind you installing other games because they arn't losing or making anything off of them. If you install google play market (Im sure almost everyone will or Amazon app store) The developers will be making a fair share off the console. Alot of people wont pirate when its .99 cents for an amazing game.
Just did the 99$ kickstarter deal so I'll be getting one.

I hope Onlive runs great on it then it will be like having 2 systems in one.
Onlive will run on it, or it should theres no reason it wouldn't.

I love the way you can upgrade ram and such :)
I will get one when its released in Ireland .
I hope that someone mods a digital tuner into it so it will be the only thing pluged into my TV B-)

I don't think you can upgrade the RAM very easily. I'd assume(didn't look much into it yet) it's either soldered onto the board with special chips or special chips that the end user will have trouble buying him/herself.

But they did say it will be fully disassemblable by the end user. So we'll have to see I guess.

I'm really interested in this. I did notice 1 thing though .The trailer contradicts itself slightly. At first she says games will all be "free to try" then at the end says she will have all these games "free to play". Which is it going to be? I'm hoping the former. You can't expect to attract developers (even Indie Developers) to a platform that is entirely free to play that they can't get any money out of except via ads. If its available in the UK for a decent price (i.e. under £100) and there's good support with 3D games at the time I'm in.

Also I foresee a trade-dress style problem with Microsoft. THat menu system is very reminiscent of Metro on the Xbox Dashboard.

If this boosts android development in anyway then I am for it. I don't care if it is a huge success or not. It is just nice to see that this type of thing is happening. I am curious how indie developers will feel if/when Valve comes out with some hardware. Will they stay on a platform like this, or jumpship to Valves hardware?

Android has a lot of content already on it, so it would be interesting to see a product like Ouya on the market. Especially since they are going for a more open to the public feel about everything. At the end of the day, even if nobody develops for this thing. We will have the entire Android app marketplace available, as well as other products like emulators. My question is, can an android app like Netflix run on the Ouya? Because in that case, this product could not only replace the gaming section of the family room, but also act as a set-top box and bring media into the family room. For 100$ that is a lot of capability. Especially when AppleTVs/GoogleTVs/Roku's all offer video services for your television for the same cost. But only the Roku offers some gaming. (that I am aware of)

If they market this product correctly, and move the release date to Holiday 2013, I can see this succeeding in the electronics market. Especially if they sell this as a media device all around. Not just gaming, but streaming music/video etc.

Think about the costs of the products on the market right now, and how bad the economy is.
Wii U, probably will be around $300.
PS3/Xbox 360/Wii range from $140-$250 on the low end.
SmartPhones/Tablets have a huge range from around $100-$600 on the low end.
AppleTV/GoogleTV/Roku have a starting price around $100.

Throwing a android based gaming console for $99 is very intruiging, but if this thing is capable of running netflix/skype/HBOGo/Hulu etc, think about how many more people would think about buying this, instead of the alternatives, especially with everyones wallets hurting.
