I'm stuck between buying a R4i-SDHC 3DS card or a R4i Gold 3DS card from v2watch and I could use some advice. I've been advised to buy the R4i Gold 3DS but the R4i-SDHC 3DS looks better but I can't tell which is actually better for a DSi. Also I'm buying a "Genuine R4 DS Revolution Flash Card" for my DS Phat from V2Watch as well, are they any good?

Get the r4i gold (r4ids.cn). But don't get a clone even if it looks better, there are only couple cards which run wood firmware officially.
There are reviews on this site you can check too but thats the one I'd suggest you get.

R4i Gold from R4ids.cn or Acekard 2i are both great choices within the $10-$15 price range, the R4i Gold due to WOOD R4 Firmware compatibility and the Acekard 2i due to the wonderful AKAIO Firmware. :)

R4i-SDHC 3DS has great compatibility and YsMenu, also they still update the firmware so it's a great option, R4iGold 3DS looks good but i have more experience with the first one

Acekard 2i due to the wonderful AKAIO Firmware (Did you mean Kernel?)

@[member='Dsingle']
I recommend you Acekard 2i,
it's the best choice if you want a cheap flashcard
AKAIO is not a Kernel - it's a firmware for compatible Acekard carts, and I wouldn't use the term "Kernel" even in reference to "R4 Kernels", mainly because I know what a Kernel is.

Sure, there's the "deep" firmware that controls I/O operations on the cart itself, but there's also the "external" firmware, also called "system menu", which controls file operations, loading and so on and so forth.

In both cases, the "menu" has grown beyond the level of a simple "pick-a-file" application and they fully deserve to be called firmwares.

I recommend you r4i gold released by www.r4ids.cn, which always releases the patch for the system updating more faster than that of ak2i. Besides, r4i gold supports 3DS V4.2.0-9 and ak2i does not release the patch for it till now.

Look at Rydian's post

Generally with flash carts "kernel" = "OS" (since it changes the system menu and game compatibility), and "firmare" = "bootloader updates" (since it modifies the bootloader for DSi/3DS compatibility).

If you don't believe me, look at the news section, where is akaio 1.9.0
What it says? Ak2, 2i, RPG kernel update

The fact that someone names something incorrectly and the rest of the users follow suit because they don't have a better name doesn't negate the fact that the name is incorrect. The so-called "kernels" do not fall under all of the requirements to be called a kernel. They're not even a part of an operating system - they're native DS applications.

Akaio is the flashcard OS, not the firmware.
But the OS in flashcards, were nominated Kernel.
Since R4, the OS got called Kernel, wrongly,
but now it's already done

R4iSDHC (Dual-Core) is not expensive and works great for DS, DSi, and 3DS. Up to 32GB microSD card memory. Decent firmware, can use wood, can use YSMenu - Runs great. Even after Black2/White2 I never had to change firmware or worry about Anti-Piracy issues on playing it. I suggest it.

AKAIO is not an operating system. AKAIO does not have its own exclusive binary format. AKAIO is a native DS binary, an .nds file that directly communicates with the internal firmware residing on the chip. It's very much a two-parter and the cart will not function if either part is missing.

AKAIO or any other "Menu" that you could install to use a flashcart controls the functions of the cart and manages files while the internal firmware based on the chip itself (bootloader) manages the booting procedures and basic functionality. Neither is a Kernel nor an OS - it's just that one part of the firmware resides on the hardware and the other part resides on the SD, one controls the hardware and its communications with the DS and the other controls the cart's functions and the graphical interface. It's always been like this.

Just so we're clear here, neither term really suits this setup, but the Acekard team themselves calls both "Firmware" because truth to be told, that's their function. A Kernel resides over CPU use, Memory use and Applications. AKAIO doesn't, neither does any flashcart software, except perhaps for the DSTwo, but only because the DSTwo actually has its own resources that it can use.
