Petit Computer, a DSiWare app that lets players make their own game using BASIC programming language, will be coming to North America this summer. It comes with 512 sprites and 256 backgrounds. You can make your own as well. You can send your creations to your SD card via QR Code and post it on the internet. Above is a game made by this software in Japan.

Very interesting, its good to see them giving us more to do with our consoles then just game or watch videos. Creating games was somthing i was interested in back in my fifth grade years (till i realized how awful i am at math and sience) but i still remember spending hours on my computer trying to create my own sprites and using them in game maker. This sounds like a dsiware i could actually buy in to o.o

This is one of those things like rodea sky soldier, and chocobo racing 3D that just fell off the face of the earth. It is nice to hear something about it again :) thank you for the news

There is already a game making version of BASIC on the Atari Greatest Hits Volume 2 , released for the DS. It comes in the Artaris Greatest Hits Vol. 2 under the extras section entitles 'Atari 400 Basic'.

I wonder if this is anything like that. The paper work include with the game states you can "use it to try your hand at making games using it", the idea intrigued me so I filed it away for later examination..

Though I'm always up for most things that add to the use and value of my DSi, especially for not game specific purposes.

Now considering the downloaded programs Flipnote, Inchworm Animations, Art Academy, and Colors (colors-on cart) it has become my personal portable digitial art studio. It's an awesome second-life for the DSi XL, while the new 3ds XL will have the new games...and Colors 3D of Course

I always said Nintendo should have put in many more practical apps as well. in the online shop., PDA functions, maps, phone lookup Dictionary, or what ever... When getting my DSi; I wanted something that was gaming hand-held first, but open to something that's not a hand-held ONLY.

Oh, great! So... you... can program in BASIC... using limited resources... and... that's that.

Uhh... libnds, anyone? :P

Seriously though, it's a great release, but just seems like too little too late. If this is how they want to stall the distribution of flashcarts then they're failing badly. The average buyer of this title is a programmer, at the very least a beginner, so at this point he or she either already knows how to code homebrew or at least have heard of the possibilities and will laught at this.

That said, it has a pleasant retro "look" to it... Better than nothing, eh? :)

HAIME?? Hoisamuro!
Although I know VisualBasic.Net (which is probably considerably different from regular BASIC), I am very pleased at the possibility of making your own games this way. The share options are a plus here.

Also.... DSiWare? Is not the DSi mostly dead? (They are no longer updating the system, I believe...)

Yeah, but they're pretty much making DSiWare 3DS downloadable software that is 2D.

Hunting and pecking a complete game with a stylus?

Only in Japan. ^_^

Bad snailface with your mean post.
Should never criticize homebrew making software.

Seriously though, I would suppose the virtual keyboard on DsiXL/3dsXL would be thumb typeable which wouldn't be so bad.
Might pick this up when it comes out. :)

I am just surprised that they are still supporting DSiWare, especially considering that new DSi games are no longer being made, I think.

There is no such thing as a DSi game, unless you mean a DS game with DSi features. In that case, there isn't too many of those games either.

Tools like libnds are for those that really want to get deep into the system's capabilities (and then some that isn't even allowed in the official SDK), but even with those, it would still take a considerable amount of work to get a game going because of the need to develop a game engine. From what I see with Petit Computer, the game engine is already made, though limited in capabilities. I would say its simplicity is what makes it nice. This could be a good first step into homebrew for those that just want to get started on making a simple game. Then, later down the road, they can move on to the next level.

Fine. SIX DSi games. NONE are critically acclaimed. That makes a TOTAL difference to my point: there are no DSi games that are being made because almost NOBODY made them.

You said that there was no such thing as a DSi game and he just disproved that. It kind of does make a difference.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
