Shall I begin the candlelight vigil or shall we just begin with the singing?
for what ?

The death of an effective Nintendo online infrastructure, the death of hardcore gamers on the Wii U, or the death of science fiction righter Ray Bradbury.

Personally I'll go with 1 or 3. Or both.

Here's what I don't understand... So you're taking an old, reviled system and changing it. Okay, Nintendo, that's a smart move. However, you're still using the old name, the one everyone associates with poor, annoying service. Why? Would it be so hard to create a new name?
Then everyone'd bash it saying "it's just fc with a different name"
I personally don't see what's wrong with a FC. It's no different to a gamertag considering gamertags are usually just as hard to remember.

No, they'll say, "Great, Nintendo's finally moving past the crap Friend Codes for something new. They're listening!" etc., etc.

Even if there was bashing, it would certainly be far, far less severe and vocal than what it's receiving with the Friend Code moniker now.

Stop crying, everyone.

It's a twelve digit number, that only needs to be entered once, since we've pretty much moved on from the "separate FC for every game" disaster.

It still sucks and would be better off with a username, but at least it's all tied together with one code per system/account. Would we really want a bunch of randoms adding us just because they know the username you use? I don't.

How many people have ever added you out of the blue from an online game?

Between years of Xbox 360 usage, I can safely say... probably one or two. "Randoms" don't add you randomly. People usually add you to your friends list because you kick it off somehow. Like if you both find yourself having a good time playing CoD you may add each other to continue having a fun time at CoD.

I don't want to redeem a code every time I want to add someone. If you literally just produce a console and it's already got a significant detractor, then how the fuck is this next gen.

It isn't next gen because it won't let you input a username? bawwwww

If they allowed for that to happen on a Nintendo system (random adds, I mean. Or friend requests), everyone would be swarmed with nine year olds adding you just because a common interest is "mario games".

I'm not sure but, didn't mw3 on the wii have the option to add players without having to enter fcs?

Yes, and Black Ops. That's pretty much it, though. Maybe Monster Hunter 3? It had usernames. Sadly that's about as far as Nintendo have allowed on the Wii.

The biggest trouble with friend codes is that you can't just go to school, college, Uni, work or anywhere and just ask anyone "Oh, what's your name on Wii/Wii U/3DS" because the numbers are so hard to remember unless you sit down and actually learn it. Even then most other people won't remember who you talk to which makes that a pointless ordeal. Then you have different names for each game you have and it's just not seamless like PSN (or SEN or whatever it's called now), Xbox LIVE and even Steam. I just find it ridiculous how Nintendo can't just add names to it instead, it's not like having random numbers combats privacy issues because you can't just add random people anyway and see their info.

Incompetent design is not an advantage.

"Hello there 4563-3456-2345-7536! It's 2346-7534-5433-4562! Shall we go play online games with 2353-3466-7754-5900 and 2346-7788-3245-2345?" Just no. /sarcasm.

Gamertags, usernames or whatever are a better way to identify unique users. If it works with FCs and lets you set up a username, why not just go with custom usernames? Well I'll just wait till the final info is released until I say wether it's dung or the epic shizles :P

Making a phone call, Bro?
Naw, just tried to get you to play Mario Party with me. Didn't work?

You guys trying to give me headache?

Oh god.. lets go back to stone age!

No. We're trying to play Mario Party. Trying is the key word here but we get our numbers muddled up :(

Consider that Nintendo said that they would have an account-based system, I have my doubts regarding these claims.

Nintendo of America bossman Reggie Fils-Aime insists that users will find the new system much easier to work with. While he wouldn't lay out any specific details for the new framework in his E3 2012 chat with Kotaku, he did confirm that the Wii U won't use "the existing friend code system."

"You will be able to identify people as friends and have a certain level of interaction vs. a different level of interaction for the more general population," he said. "The method by which you identify someone as a friend is a lot simpler than what's happening today with Friend Codes."

He did say it isn't "the existing friend-code system". Perhaps it's just friend-codes in the name?

....although if it is friendcodes, then that's a stupid backwards decision.

Some developers are saying that they are completely gone.
The Wii U is also confirmed by Nintendo to have up to 12 accounts for each system sold.

“Oh yeah, was confirmed to me today that friend codes are gone for Wii U.” - David Gibson

Nintendo are saying that they will have an easy system for making friends in place and that it depends on the system settings are used.
Just like how you can restrict stranger voice chat on the 3DS for certain games.

A friend code system is fine by me though as long as it has the same level of interactivity with added and non-added friends like what they showed with Miiverse.
The system even allows you to view messages and drawings from people you haven't added, besides, remember that Direct Wii U trailer with the non-specific action figure?

The guy in that vid was reading game comments by strangers owning the same game as him and they all had usernames.
Nothing is confirmed until Nintendo of Japan comments on it. NoA never gives us any clear answers, it's always a "maybe"...
