At least this guy's trying to do shit. He may not have shown off crazy-hacker-level stuff, but nobody ever hacked a device by sitting around and bitching.
Well, at least the guys sitting around and bitching don't go around asking $2000 for something they might not even be able to pull off.

My issue with the attitude in this thread is that a lot of the people complaining are people who have never done anything at all. This guy wants to help and even though his contributions have been minor, they exist (which is much more than you can say for the majority of 'tempers).

You all know that shit gets broken and tools are needed in order to do introductory hacks, right? All those PSP 3000s people tested firmwares on and ended up bricking didn't get pulled out of somebody's ass. All those DSi units disassembled and hardware hacked didn't come from a genie. Those Wii units Team Twiizers experiments with aren't made of sunshine dust and fairy sprinkles. And have you guys priced some of the hardware hacking tools out there? Simple readers and writers for things can often be found

Huh!

Maybe we can dornate to skuf to make wii u ipad emu? Can I have email to talk to him please!

We're talking 2K here because it's something available from only one source (so that's not controllable), and the guy knows it's a lot to ask which is why he's gathering public donations and said he'll share it with other people.

tl;dr: Shut up you damned leechers.
Alas, won't the PSV SDK need you to sign an NDA, which probably also requires you to not reverse-engineer the system? (pretty much every system developer out there does that nowadays, Sony even asks you that when you register to FREAKING PSN which has nothing to do with developing, go figure if the dev-kit isn't even stricter)

So, it'll end up that this guy will have a devkit then he'll say "sorry guys, Sony now owns my ass because of the contract I had to sign to receive this devkit", and everyone will go "OH WELL! :(" and this guy will have a nice $2000 devkit for free in his hands.

A lot of hackers do everything for free (ever seen TT asking for donations? Waninkoko? Kakarotto? Matieulh? The list will go on.) - the only leecher around here looks to be SKFU himself.

Just saiyan'

EDIT: Also, it'll be nice to see how he intends to share a devkit which weighs a ton and requires you to spend $100 in shipping everytime you need to send it out.

i agree with you ,an anonymous hacker released ps vita full system backup with kernel of psp on psvita and never asked for donations to release it job,and i believe he managed to fdo that on a normal ps vita.
i would have donated if a ps vita cfw was released with psp emulator full opened...

Yes, because knowing a lot of shit means you can get a job at any time where spending $2000 on a hobby is child's play, especially in today's economy. Insert eyeroll here.

Anyways I'm not saying he's going to succeed, I'm just pissed off by all the leechers. If you're not going to donate (I'm not), that's fine, but don't get all pissy when a developer asks you for a donation so he can buy some tools. I mean with the attitude you guys have it's like you EXPECT these guys to do this shit, out of their pocket for free.

Oh wait, you do.

I'll just repeat the little NDA snippet again. If he buys a devkit, and then uses it to hack the PSV, Sony will have his ass on a silver plate. This time it'll be even worse as it was with Geohot. This entire donation drive is useless.

This is not being a leecher (I don't even have a PSV, so I have no horse in this race), this is just being realist. I'm not hating, but it's blatant that this guy hasn't got the faintest idea of how buying a devkit works.

Wow Rydian, way to be a jerk. You used Team Twiizers as an example to back up your argument and as a member of that group, I simply disagree with what you were trying to prove. At the same time you're repeatedly blasting everyone else for being leechers while admitting you're not going to donate for reasons which you're keeping to yourself; pot, meet kettle.

Okay, this is getting quite heated, let's all cool off.

I agree that certain people sit in the Leech Seat just "expecting" devs to buy expensive tools out of their own pockets and hack consoles *for them* for free - this is a valid choice, however those people have to also understand that without proper tools for the job, hacking the system will simply take a whole lot of time - moreso than WITH the tools in question.

Even IF the developers have well-paid jobs and can afford the kits themselves, what exactly have YOU done to make a complete stranger dish out aprox. $2500 for YOUR convinience and YOUR ability to use homebrew and, most likely, ROM's? How are they in any way obliged to give you their hacks and exploits? They're doing this for both the masses and their own pleasure, not JUST for themselves.

Moreover, the donations don't have to be sizable - a buck or two will not be a big burden for anyone and it's for a relatively "good" cause scene-wise. Even if this will end up being a scam (it won't - nobody would risk their reputation to pull off something like this) it's not like you're going to lose a lot of money. People give more to street bums, and those usually waste the money on boozee.

I'd personally love to donate, but as a person without PayPal (It appears to have allergic reactions when it sees my account) I cannot. I'm actively considering trying with a different card after my paycheck though, because why the hell not.

Nobody's forcing anyone to donate - do what you think is right. What Rydian and I am trying to say is that if you feel this is a cause worthy your donation - consider it. It's genuine, not a scam.

You disagree with what? People who do the kind of preliminary hacking I'm talking about sometimes end up breaking machines by mistake (or rendering them inoperable for the original purpose, such as making a DSi non-portable through disassembly and soldoring extra parts to it), and the hardware costs money that they often pull out of their own pocket (or in other cases the units of testers are broken).

At the same time you're repeatedly blasting everyone else for being leechers while admitting you're not going to donate for reasons which you're keeping to yourself; pot, meet kettle.
The problem with your assessment is that it assumes I have something to gain or lose from this. I have no Vita and no plans to get one. I'm here on moral grounds.

People put their time and money into stuff like this all the time, the fact that people are insulting a guy for trying to collect donations so he can buy something for the scene... I find the behavior atrocious.

As am I, so please spare me your condescending attitude. I stand by my original statement (which wasn't even addressed to you), you can roll your eyes all you like but that doesn't change the fact that I'm basing my opinion on direct experience.

My answer to your original statement had nothing to do with leechers, it's that I found your statement nonsensical.
Being able to contribute towards hacking a game system does not guarantee that you'll have a job where you can toss out $2K on a hobby.

Or a job in general.

One of the people laid off in that situation was actually somebody that was working on a project for the DS scene, for example.
