Well if you're really new to the Prime saga just play first Metroid Prime 1.
Since Gamecube games are really cheap by now you could probably buy both Metroid Prime 1 & 2.
If by any chance you get a Wii try getting Metroid Prime Trilogy

Too late! Just bought Metroid Prime 1 for GameCube. About £6 with postage, is this a good deal? It's the cheapest I could find it with the box and instructions (There was a listing for just the disk for £3.99 but I like to have the box as well).

Also I bought a 128Mb memory card for £4.99. Ebay is wonderful.

I bought the same game complete with nice case and instructions for $8 from the local toy shop. Then I got a second complete copy as part of a 15 game lot for $20.

Sounds like a good deal to me. :-) Being the purist I am, I always suggest playing in order of release, even if the earlier installments were terrible (though I make exceptions for Zelda, since almost all the games are practically "rebooted" stories anyway)

£5 without postage (from your link) will turn out more than the £6 including postage that I got it for off Ebay; once you add on the cost of postage.

Got it in the mail today, it's kind of boring. I've played the NES version and I didn't see the point in it, but I saw some videos of the GameCube version on YouTube and they looked really cool because it was a first person shooter that was with robots and aliens and not as violent or expensive as CoD (the only FPS I've ever played before is Doom so I wanted to try another one aswell) so I decided to try it out and all you do is go arround scanning stuff. I got to a boss called the queen of parasites or something but it's hard to see the boss because everything is so dark and dull, not like Nintendo's style at all, if I wanted a mediocre FPS game that major companies poo out all of the time I would have turned to the PS2's libary.

Now I must prepare myself for being flamed by the NES Metroid, GameCube Metroid and PS2 fanboys.

Fact is, the Frigate Orpheon is a boring starting level. Once you get over the planet, you can start exploring à la Metroid-style.

You don't really need to scan everything, but if you're after the best ending, you'll have to. And it even give tips about ennemies.

What Fyrus said. Think of it like Z-Targetting and asking Navi about enemies in zelda, but cooler and less annoying. Lol.

Also, thing about Prime is, it's not a true fps, honestly. In fact, Nintendo made a point of classifying it as a "first person adventure" rather than a shooter, and I think it makes sense. Rather than destroying hordes of enemies (though that does happen sometimes), the game focuses on the typical metroid exploration of other metroid games.

But honestly, if you dislike Prime, give Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, and Metroid Zero Mission (a much better gba remake of the original) a chance. You might seriously like them. I honestly never liked the original nes metroid and metroid II myself.

Metroid and Metroid II: Return of Samus really didn't age well, so it's good that there's a remake of the first. There's also a PC remake of the second in the works.

But yeah, @ OP, if you're interested in the series, then an eventual must-play is definitely Super Metroid.

I played the demo of AM2R a while back. It's seriously impressive. I only wish they would do it as a SNES/GBA ROM, rather than a PC game. But maybe that's just me.

And yes, Super Metroid is DEFINITELY a must-play!

Also, in my opinion, Metroid Fusion is a good starting point for newbies to the series, since it's a bit more linear, while still keeping many of the exploration elements, so it's less overwhelming than the "here you go, figure out where to go and what to do yourself" style of most of the other Metroid games.
