A friend of mine is claiming something outrageous.

Let me attempt to explain.
  1. She keeps track of all the DS games she plays, her personal rating of the game, what region they are, and when she originally downloads them. It's so she doesn't redownload games she hated later on after having forgotten about them.
  2. She says Dragon Quest IV: Realms of Revelation is on her list with the original download date stated as October 2010 and the region as US. After sending the list to me, I can confirm this is exactly what is on her list
  3. She never gets this wrong, from what I understand. When she downloads a ROM, she lists the ROM in her list and updates it later with her rating of the game.
  4. I've told her how much this is impossible, as the game's English release wasn't until 2011, but when I showed her the gameplay of the beginning, she said that was the game she played. She said she also remembered getting the AP fix for the game's infinite loop of the dream sequence at the beginning.
The only way this would be possible would have been that she got the name wrong on accident and she played another game that starts out exactly like Realms of Revelation, but never corrected the title. Are there any Dragon Quest DS games that start out exactly like Realms of Revelation and have the same anti-piracy?

If I remeber correctly around the time in question an unannounced translation of DQ6 showed up on torrent sites. It may of been in Nov or Dec but, it was in 2010.

I tell her to use torrents, but she's never able to figure out which torrents download the fastest, so she gives up and goes to -ROM site I'm not naming- or -Another ROM site I'm not naming-. So she didn't torrent it...

She also claims that the version she played had the exact same script as the official version of Realms of Revelation.

....I'm asking her about it again and she now claims that all the videos on Youtube of Realms of Revelation are 99% exactly the same as the Realms of Revelation she played, with the 1% difference being that the blue-haired PC wasn't the main character (but was still around as a party member, she says!) and that the purple-clothed PC from DQ5 was the main character.

Lol I'm going to have to assume she played DQV and watched some video of VI or messed around with the japanese rom and got them mixxed up somehow.

She has. It's on her list, too. However, it's listed for just last month, so it can't have been that her memory of it was fuzzy and she mushed it with another game.

And she couldn't have messed around with the Japanese ROM. From what I've seen, she refuses to play a Japanese release of any game that is going to get a US release, or already has one.

well:
- V also had an AP loop
- as mentioned above, there was an unofficial VI translation in the works that someone leaked
- both games have similar graphics

it could have been any

That translation was complete from what I've seen but, it didn't come out till december from the bit of searching I did.

Being an avid DQ fan as fencingfox must be judging by the name and avatar. Shes mistaken no doubt about it. There is no DQ DS game with a dream loop AP like the one from DQVI staring the guy from DQV as the main character and that main character of DQ6 as a normal party member. Thats like saying hey remeber that game that was like Final Fantasy VIII but had Cloud from FFVII as the main character instead. But as fencing said DQV did have a similar AP problem and they both run on the same engine so it would be easy to mix them if you didn't play the games for more then a little bit.

Probably, but what she says makes sense. I've pulled up VERY old logs where she says "DUDE, PLAY YOUR OCARINA FASTER", "YES, THE LEGEND IS FUCKING TRUE", and "FUCK, HE TURNED US TO STONE" in the same conversation with no context and no reply when I asked, and these messages were from 2010.

...I've just found a log where she says "Little cousin deleted my Dragon Quest game while trying to start cooking Mama. People on a ROM forum say the DQ game doesn't exist in english yet. They don't believe the save file from it is legit." Since she didn't specify which DQ game, I had assumed it was one of the preexisting ones and that the forumers were trolling her. But now that I have her list, it's apparent that DQ6 was the only DQ ROM she had at the time.

What.

If it had been just a few days or weeks before the US release, it could very well have been leaked, but I highly doubted there'd be a leak from the game so early, the game was released in Japan around January 2010 and then released in the USA in February 2011, seeing as SE is a pretty big name I doubt they'd allow a leak to happen that soon, even if the logs say that she played it, I don't buy it.

She claims it had the official US logo...

Isn't that not known until closer to the release date?

AFAIK logos for all the DS DQ games are the same for both JP and US(and probably EU) releases. funny tho, the DQ6 logo is the blue-haired guy, who's obviously the main guy. one explanation could be that she played enough to get Terry and she put him on lead. he kinda looks like the DQ5 main, but his gear is more turquoise.

still, that game came out on a torrent site on xmas 2010, and ended up on a rom site the next day.

The DQ logos aren't the same from Japan to America.

Examples: Japanese DQVI Logo / Japanese DQVI Box Art | US DQVI Logo / US DQVI Box Art
As you can see, the Japanese "Dragon Quest" text has a more realistic wooden look to the 3D effect, while the US "Dragon Quest" text is a bit more cartoony.
Then the background bit of the logo being all askew in the Japanese logo is missing from the US logo. Most of the time, most (or all) of the background bits in the Japanese logo will not be in the US logo.

From what I've seen, the European logo stays roughly the same as the US logo does.

though on the other hand, the Dragon Quest logos have been fairly uniform within their own countries for a very, very long time. Hell, I'm playing through Dragon Warrior II on the GBC (What? They fine tuned the first few when the re-released them for the handheld in only mild ways) and though it's still "Warrior" at this point, the logo still strongly resembles the US DQVI logo up there.

For some strange reason I coulda sworn that the DS remakes of the DQ games came out earlier than 2010 too, but then again, I'm sorta a dummy.
