Apple Education Event: Revolutionizing School the Apple Way

Today Apple had their Education Event to show off their new update to iBooks and iTunes University

Apple wants to revolutionize school and reading, so today they released an update to iBooks 2.0, which includes textbooks for iPad and many more improvements

Apple also included iBook Author for authors to create their own books using a Mac, its free in the Mac App Store

Apple also today released iTunes U app for iOS, for those who have used Black Board, iTunes U comes in to possibly to replace it someday, Apple is planning on teachers to use iTunes U to do push notifcations to Students who have iPads for homework updates, a nice new feature possibly include reminders to do your homework, right now this is aimed at high school students and college campuses will be including this soon.

Apple has gotten McGraw, Houghton, Mifflin, and Harcourt on board to publish text books for courses

Then your cousin goes to a rich public school. They do exist. I go to one.

But seriously, unless they give me an iPad, why would I do this over buying a textbook? I can get textbooks used and for cheaper. I'm sure it's better than buying an iPad and then buying digital textbooks. I sure hope you can easily annotate them too.

My history teacher currently just scans the chapter we're on and posts it on our workspace. I haven't opened my textbook in months, I just download the scans he gives us and use those.

Honestly, get a laptop. They'll come in handy a lot more than an iPad in the college setting.

ACTUALLY, most of them don't as Guild said, and moreover, some schools require their pupils/students to have an Apple computer. Not "a Hackintosh" or "something that runs a Mac OS", an *Apple computer* specifically, which in my opinion is a clear lobby.

I see this as more for prep schools that as of now take their students' tuition to give the macbooks.
Apple has very good deals for education, all we had till middle school were apple computers.
This is just a way for schools to cut costs further down the road in apple's vision of everyone using mobile computing devices (tablets and the like)

Personally, I don't see this as a reason for people to buy iPads, but I see it useful for people who would buy an iPad(or have one already) anyway. If you already have an iPad, and books are cheaper on it, I don't see why you would rather physical books. I mean, I'd rather have all my college textbooks on a slim, light and easy to carry around device than lug heavy books everywhere.

Not saying this is a reason to buy an iPad. But good for people who already do have one.

You can annotate textbooks? Unless the iPad has a feature for that. Plus I don't know how used textbooks stack up to digital ones. You can also buy a used textbook and sell it back when you're done with it. Sure, it's heavier, but I'd rather carry around a bit of extra weight than pay for an iPad.

Oh, and if your iPad breaks, have fun buying a new one. Sure, you'll keep your textbooks, but you'll need to have an iPad to view them. Apple products aren't exactly known for being "sturdy" or "durable" either, and college settings aren't exactly forgiving either.

I said if you already had an iPad.
If you don't want an iPad, or don't plan to get one, then regular books are still an option.
This isn't being forced on you. Just gives people more options. I don't see textbook publishers stopping making physical copies anytime soon, since they still make money on those.

Well you should see the kids these days. I've commonly seen kids with broken screens on their iPod Touches and iPhones. Also, in a college setting, it's not exactly going to be in the safest conditions.

And still, probably buying a bunch of used textbooks is cheaper than buying an iPad and all those digital textbooks instead. I get it for "existing iPad owners" but I don't see this being compelling for college students unless they have a rich mommy and daddy who will pay their way through anything for them.

my text books in college were 200-600 per semester. an ipad wouldn't of been a bad investment for me back then. but in the end, i'm sure you'll be able to convert the ibooks to some other format to work in any device.

I don't think so. I mean, maybe. But it'd have to be a special app on said platform. Since this whole thing needs a new program to make these books and a whole new iBooks update(iBooks 2) to work.

Lame. It's cheaper to buy used textbooks than an iPad along with books.

• If you want to view these textbooks, you'll have to use an iPad. Don't bother trying to read them anywhere else. You're tied down to their propeitary format.
• Publishers can only sell books through the iBookstore where Apple will take a 30% cut of the profit.
• You'll have to buy another $600+ iPad if your iPad breaks.

It also screws over book publishers too.

Apple, in this EULA, is claiming a right not just to its software, but to its software’s output. It’s akin to Microsoft trying to restrict what people can do with Word documents, or Adobe declaring that if you use Photoshop to export a JPEG, you can’t freely sell it to Getty. As far as I know, in the consumer software industry, this practice is unprecedented.
