I'm currently using a DS Lite with an Acekard 2i flashcart and was looking for an upgrade.
First of all, as I haven't been paying attention to homebrew news for such a long time, will I be able to use my Acekard 2i on my 3ds? and if so, can I play 3ds games on it, or will I need a new flashcard? If so, what cards are recomended?
optionally; Does anyone feel it's not worth the upgrade?

I found it for a pretty good steal at $125, but I'm also considering going with a sony psp go/3000 (that I can get for $100), although I'm not sure where that stands in the hacking department and would have to look into that before investing.

My current ds is becoming frustrating to use because of the crappy L and R shoulder pads not working very often.

You CANNOT and WILL NOT EVER be able to play 3DS games on a DS flashcard.

It's called a DS flashcard for a reason.

As far as purchasing a 3DS.
That's entirely up to you.
The current library is good for a few games but the real hits will be released soon.

edit: 1000th post yay

Thanks for the answer. There are 3DS flash carts though, right? which one would you recommend?
I notice that there's an Acekard 3 out, so that might be what I go with.

Will I be able to play ds games on a 3ds flashcart? or will I have to switch between the 2?

Yes.

Everything you can do on a DS flashcard will still work on a 3DS in DS mode.
That means play homebrew/hacked games/emulators/DS games itself.

I'm a bit concerned as I'm not sure if anything I'm finding is from a illegitimate source.

Acekard.com is still displaying images of the Acekard 2i, while acekard3.com is the only source I can find that claims to be selling AK3's, however when I click "buy" I'm taken to a page selling Acekard 2i's

I'm also accustomed to buying from l33tmod.com, but they have nothing in the 3ds section.

Is there really such thing as 3ds flash card for playing 3ds backups?
It's really a hassle to carry cards around, and a huge inconvenience.

The Acekard 2i will work on the 3DS just as good as it will work on a DS Lite.

Acekard3 is a scam.
There is a 3DS flashcard called the Crown3DS but it is not commercially available and not something that you think of a flashcard.
Many people doubt it's legit.

All commercial DS flashcards work on the 3DS as long as they have a "i" in their name.
They will play DS games but will NOT play 3DS games.

Will Acekard 2i play DSi games in DSi mode or still in DS mode?
I can't find the info how the DSi games work or not on Acekard 2i

No, the 3DS has NOT been hacked to play 3DS games yet. The AceKard 3 is a fake, go grab the update for the Acekard 2i you have.
Better yet, get a SuperCard.

Oh, that's to bad then. I think I'm just gonna go with the psp go then. I want some newer games, and I'm not going to get that with the ds
maybe there's some homebrew with the psp3000 that I can play them off of a memory stick, but sony's memory sticks are proprietary, so I can expect them to be more expensive as such (although I'll look into it first).
At least I can legitimately load games on the psp go's internal memory, there's no way I'm going to carry around umd's (I already don't want to hold game cards, and umd's are much larger)

but @[member='iSubaru']:
Yes it can, but you might need the latest acekard firmware to get it to boot on the dsi

It can play DSi games in DS mode.
Only the Cyclo DSi iEvo is capable of DSi Mode.

ak2i plays dsi-enhanced games in ds mode; you won't have extra ram nor camera access, but you'll be able to play the game. The only flashcart that will run in dsi mode is the Cyclo iEvo.

I do have DS and 3DS only, latest Acekard 2i firmware (3.0.0) and latest AKAIO (1.8.9)
I believe DS can't run DSi games (it would totally break time and space fabrics) but maybe 3DS...or is Acekard able to boot 3DS only to DS mode without DSi possibilities?

EDIT #1
Ah, 2 posts arrived before my entry...sorry for mess :P

Sorry for my mistake, I thought there was no difference between ds mode and dsi mode, as both games will run the same on both systems (except for maybe the camera). I don't think I've seen a "dsi" game that didn't work on the ds

Some games (i.e. Pokemon Black/White) also uses the extra ram that is available on dsi mode to speed up the game.

another stupid question: Is there any means of playing backups of 3ds games on the 3ds?
When I told my friend I was going with the psp he showed me a video on youtube titled "play 3ds roms on 3ds without flashcard", but the video just showed him playing a game (no proof whatsoever) and linked to a download site (which I obviously didn't click). Obviously looked fake, but I had to wonder, lol.

It's also a bit of hassle that I would never be able to make backups with my ez-flash since it doesn't have a gba slot, but I supposed that would be even more frustrating with the huge file sizes of these new games.
