middle of 2009.

edit: also, the non-bc compatible Wiis came out like half a year ago. And there is 0 chance they have the old drive chip - they wont even accept GC discs (spits them out again, apparently).

I have 2006.. should I not trust the wiidrives site then? Because it's telling me I have a D2E drive..

what...? You said you had the one without GC ports... Make up your mind lol.

edit: but just try what wiipower said already, it will tell you if your drive is too new or not.

I do.. but the copyright year on it is 2006. Also, when I searched m serial number on wiidrives.com it said I had the D2E drive..
Anyways, yeah, once I get the chance to go out and get an SD card and some DVDs, I'm going to try it.. is there any game that runs really well as a backup you would recommend I try? I have a bunch since I had a wii before which broke so I might have a good candidate.

You dont need a disc to check what WiiPower said.
Copyright year means jack-shit. Its production date you want.
And I repeat, NO new-gen (no gc support) wii have any drive older than d3-2 (Im not sure if theres even any with d3-2).

Alright, well I'll still need an SD card which I'll have to go out and get.. that kinda sucks that they can't read backups anymore.. But what was the deal with that mod chip mentioned earlier? Does that actually work?

You don't have gamecube controller ports or memory card ports. Emulating the memory card on sd card exists, but it's not 100% stable yet. Emulating gamecube controllers with wii motes or classic controllers is very difficult, as well as emulating them with usb game controllers. Both would need some dirty hack like DIOS MIOS (not DML) and quite some additional work in order to get it to work. Short: It won't happen.

alright then, so what about playing wii backups? if I have the D3 drive, is there a mod chip that I can get so that it will play backups? or am I restricted to using a USB hard drive?

d3-2 and d4 can not under any circumstances play backup discs.
Your only options are 1) Replace the drive chip with an older model 2) use a modchip which can load stuff from SD card 3) use a wode which emulates the dvd and costs a fortune or 4) use USB loading (best)

alright, thanks! When I get an SD card I'll soft mod my wii and set up some games on my hard drive.
