Well, I know that they're needed and it's part of the way windows 7 does things, but don't you find it annoying to have so many of them running at the same time? xP
They don't eat much ram or anything, but I find pretty stupid for there to be so many, couldn't Microsoft group them all together? It doesn't look pretty to have so many.

If I remember correctly, the new task manager in windows 8 actually shows which svchosts are used by what programs. Doesn't take away the fact that microsoft was too lazy giving us insight in what svchost is which.

svchost.exes are equal in number to how many services you're running. Looks like you've got too many services running at the same time or something.

FINALLY. I'm totally switching over to 8 asap.

Yeah, I do have a lot of them running, not that it matters since it doesn't affect the way the pc runs, it's just annoying to have so many.

And that seems quite useful, at least you'll be able to know what programs are eating your ram. xP

if you dont want to wait or use a preview build, you could check process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653

For anyone interested, this is how the task manager in windows 8 shows what programs use a particular process:

Erm, you can do that in Windows 7...

Right click the svchost and click Go To Service(s)

Edit: and I'm pretty sure you can do this in XP/Vista too.
Windows 8 just gives you an easier way to access the services, which you shouldn't touch unless you know what you're messing with.

I think it is only available on the big boy versions of XP (ones that can join a domain unless you otherwise download it http://commandwindows.com/tasklist.htm ) and I believe it is standard for all vista and 7 releases but tasklist usually does a fair line in telling you what services each one is running if you tack on a /svc to the command.
