Hacking R4i SDHC - Flash Upgrade, assistance please.

Hi All,

Welcome, and seasons greetings to you all!!!

I've not been around much, as I have no need personally... (as I dont own a DS) however you guys were awesome when you helped me solve my mums DS Lite issue a year or so ago, and thank you so much for that.... and so now comes a new problem, which I seek your vast knowledge.

As said, I dont have a DS, or dealings with, and so I am a noob to this (PCs, I am fine with). However my brother has bought his son a DSi (not sure model, but its not XL or 3DS) and I told him to get an R4 card. A lot has changed when I bought mums one, as back then there wasnt anything to do with versions, and firmware for cards/console?? and was told there wont be any firmware for consoles and so safe to do so.

Device: Nintendo DSi (with both camera's) not sure model?
Device OS/Software: 1.4.2 E
Flash Card: R4i-SDHC 3DS with WiFi Engine (the bigger box one: http://www.r4i-sdhc.com/images/bane_3ds.jpg)

Now, we are STUMPED what to do...?? We have tried to follow the website, guides and YouTube vids, but because it doesnt make proper sense, we are unsure what we are flashing??

What firmware do we need? (currently the Device is 1.4.2 E) as we seen reference to 1.4.3 from here: http://www.r43dsguides.com/2011/04/21/r4i-gold-3ds-card-r4i-gold-euinstallation-guide/

Can someone point us to the exact file, as it references the 3DS, even though we dont have a 3DS device, other than the R4i card has the 3DS label on it.

What exactly is being flashed? The DSi OS or the FlashCart ROM ?
- is it safe to do so, as I heard you cant downgrade? not that thats an issue as long as the card works?

Please be noob friendly, as we really have no idea, and its for his sons Xmas present. We tried to follow the guides, but dont want to brick anything...

To make sure that your cart works on the latest DSi/3DS firm ware then you need to follow these instructions
3DS V3.0.0-5firmware upgrade instruction

this will update the flashcard allowing it to run on latest DSi/XL update

then you should be good to go and updat ethe DSi/XL to latest version

not sure why above one is telling you how to edit skin tho lol

Yeah I think my bruv tried the 1.5.1 kernel.zip file, and was just getting the Nemo icon...

So I think what we need to do, as suggested by the site, and you guys... is update the firmware? But what does this actually update? Is it updating the software inside the DSi itself? or is it merely updating the software/flash of the R4i card?

And do we do this (like above?) on the original DSi console? or does it need to be done on an older DS Lite?

I think we are almost good to go, and THANK YOU so much for listing the exact firmware, as we dont want to flash any ole file, and find we brick it... (there ya go son, a paperweight for christmas... lol)

And once we done all this firmware flashing, does Nintendo send firmware updates over WiFi automatically... or are you prompted if a new one comes out?? As we dont want it to auto update, and go through this again.... lol

You need to install the 1.51b kernel and then run the flashcart firmware update to make sure that your cart runs on the latest DSi/3DS firmware. Once that has happened (it should work on your DSi as it is but if you get an error message then you will need to run it on a DS/DSl) then and only then should you up date your DSi firmware.

Hi Buleste and Pong20302000,

First of, thanks again for your help guys, you've been great... we feel we understand it a little more now, as you made it clearer to understand.

However, Pong... have you removed one of your posts?? as I am sure you had more instructions in yours too....

What we need help with guys, is which file do we need to download to update our DSi ?? As the console has 1.4.2 E alrady on it, do we need to extract fwup142c.nds or fwup143b.nds to the root of the SD card?

The firmware update is embedded in the 1.51b download. All you need to do is boot up the flash card in your DSi, with the files Buleste told you to put on the root. (you know the 1.51b files) Next, select the Finding Nemo icon on the DSi home menu, then choose the icon on the far right labeled "Configuration" and press "A." The menu will advance. Now you need to choose "Update", by using the "A" button once again, followed by "Start," using the "A" button for a final time. The firmware update will begin. Once the message appears saying the firmware has been successfully updated, go ahead with power cycling your DSi (that means turn it off using the power button and turn it back on using the power button.) Congrats you should now have Chronicles of Narnia as your R4i flash card icon. You can update your DSi if you wish, or just leave it at 1.4.2. All 1.4.3 really adds is the ability to use the Nintendo E-shop.

Thanks once again both of you, this couldnt be any simplier now... lol. Im sorry if it sounds really dumb, but this is like blind-blind situ, as this is for my brother (who doesnt live with me) and so passing this info over to him, as I cant see what happens as dont have it in front of me. I have sent him a link to this thread, so he can see the replies/info...

With both those last two replies above, there is no room for failure, and fully understand all that is asked. And glad to hear its not actually updating the DSi as such, as 1.4.3 only adds eShop thingie (as ya said). So I think we can live without that... lol

Hopefully he will see this when he returns in, and either comment (or ask me too on his behalf as he doesnt have an account here) and should he have any issues, I shall be seeing him tomorrow...

Guys, I cant thank you enough for being so patient, and with your excellent support/feedback... its totally appreciated by us both.

Just to let you all know, it worked brilliantly... and easily.... couldnt of done this without you guys!!

It worked, we have some ROMs on and that, and he gave it to his son for Christmas.... he now has a very happy son!! he he he
